Biomedical Autism Intervention - Why Does it Seem So Expensive?

A Biomedical Autism Doctor Explains Why Autism Treatment Can Be Costly

Money is always as issue when it comes to medical care. This is particularly true for parents seeking treatment options for their autistic child. In many cases insurance companies do not pay (or pay limited amounts) for even traditional services such as speech, occupational or behavioral therapy. Unfortunately, insurance coverage for biomedical interventions such as supplement therapy, diagnostic medical testing, dietary services, etc. is limited as well.

There is no doubt that medical care is expensive - particularly when someone is paying out of pocket. However, in many cases it has to be done if a parent wants to get excellent care for their child. In the world of autism, particularly biomedical interventions, many therapies are out-of-pocket expenses because traditional insurance coverage is very limited in what it will approve. This also goes for doctor visits and consults.

One of the real issues in treating children on the autism-spectrum is the fees many doctors have to charge to stay in business. It is not uncommon for a physician to charge $350 to $500 per hour for their service. Up front this seems extreme, but one must understand that the time involved in treating an autistic child with all of their medical complexities takes a tremendous amount of time and education.

A typical initial visit with a biomedical autism doctor can take 60 to 90 minutes, and follow-ups 30 to 45 minutes. For most doctors if they were submitting for insurance reimbursement under the typical HMO format their costs and overhead would dictate most office visits to 10 to 15 minutes. In most situations, this is just not enough time to provide the care that is needed to be a biomedical autism specialist. Furthermore, with the rising costs of running a medical practice - from office staff fees, insurance, workman' s compensation, lease payments and more, the fees that a physician charges (although it seems high) will barely cover a physician's overhead. If this doctor also has medical school debt (which for many can be in the 10's to 100's of thousands of dollars) the price of biomedical intervention can be costly on both sides - for the parent and the physician. Aside from these issues, most doctors providing this specialty service are doing so because they want to help and serve the autism community. The stark reality of running a practice and making a living, however, dictate the higher prices for biomedical intervention.

Biomedical Autism Treatment - Does it Really Work?

Doctor Reveals The Truth About The Effectiveness of Biomedical Autism Treatment:

What is Biomedical Autism Treatment?

The basic, short answer is this; biomedical autism treatment is the practice of treating the underlying medical problems that can trigger autism and other disorders. Many people with an autism-spectrum disorder (ASD) have a very real medical condition that could include genetic susceptibilities, detoxification imbalance, immune dysfunction, nutritional deficiencies, dietary sensitivities, biochemical abnormalities and others. These medical conditions can become causative factors in their ASD condition. A biomedical autism treatment approach comes from the awareness that Autism-spectrum disorders for many individuals is NOT just a psychological condition with no hope for improvement or recovery, like some say. It is, instead, a medical condition that has the potential to be reversed.

Does Biomedical Autism Treatment Really Work?

Yes...with a caveat. Like any other therapy, biomedical autism treatment results can vary depending on a number of factors. These include the severity of the disorder, the cause of the disorder, how quickly you administer biomedical autism treatment after your child's diagnosis, and how well you implement the therapies. The results, too, will vary form child to child. Some experience a full recovery with little or no obvious signs of their disorder. Some children respond only slightly. Luckily the big dramatic results seem to outweigh the little advances. The only way to see how well your child will respond to biomedical autism treatment is to try. You have really have nothing to lose, and the possibility of a greatly improved quality of life for your child.

Can It Hurt My Child?

Biomedical autism treatments are basically putting your child's body chemistry back to where it should be. It is a matter of finding out what your child's body has too much or too little of, and adjusting those levels. This is done with certain diet, supplement and vitamin intervention. There are no experimental drugs, or voodoo medicine. These same therapies could be given to a child without an autism-spectrum disorder, and that child could see no difference in their behavior, however, the child who is lacking certain elements or whose body is making or retaining to much of another, could experience a dramatic improvement.

Why Didn't My Child's Doctor Tell Me About Biomedical Autism Treatment?

Unfortunately, there are many in the medical field who believe autism spectrum disorders are only a neuro-development disorder and stop there. Some are unwilling to look at the overwhelming results that have been seen with biomedical autism treatment, simply because it falls outside of their education or specialty. The sad part is, they have nothing else to offer. It's not like they are saying "don't do that stuff, do this instead...They just say "don't do that", without anything else to offer. Your child could benefit greatly from biomedical autism treatments. What really do you have to lose in trying biomedical autism treatment...maybe a few dollars if the results are minimal. But what if the results are dramatic, like so many other children experience? Doesn't your child deserve such an opportunity at a better quality of life? I urge you to get educated in this powerful therapy and to take action now!

Don't let ANYONE tell you there is nothing you can do to help your child. Autism really is treatable! Start your child down the road to recovery from autism. Autism Treatment - Stopping Biomedical Treatments and Autism

I want to discuss the issue of starting and stopping biomedical therapies and what the normal protocol is. I am often asked a question like "Dr. Woeller, if my child is taking B12, or my child is on various supplements or medications like Diflucan or maybe Nystatin, should I be weaning my child off of these supplements or can they just be stopped all of a sudden?". In my experience, and this applies to the majority of the biomedical therapies that we use, if your child reaches a plateau where you are no longer seeing improvements, and if your doctor is in agreement on this, it is my experience that you can stop these therapies all at once without seeing any negative reactions.

And certainly when you look at other medications for other medical issues like certain steroid medications or certain anti-depressant medications and various types of psychiatric medications that often times do need to be removed slowly, where you are backing off slowly from one dose to a lower dose. But when we are talking about vitamin therapies like B12 or anti-fungals or even most supplements, in my experience there is no need to wean your child off. And this again is something that you would still want to run by your own doctors but in my opinion there is no weaning process for these types of therapies. But a very common question I get in my practice is whether someone can stop B12 with their child suddenly or whether or not their child needs to be weaned off. With B12, in my experience, if it is time to stop that therapy you can just do so immediately and if you want to resume that therapy at a later time then you can.

So when we are discussing biomedical treatments, many of the therapies are the same way. You are not usually going to see dangerous reactions occurring, we are not using highly toxic substances and they are not highly stressful medications either. There are definitely medications that do require weaning and this is still an issue where you would always want to work with your own physician on this. But, for the most part, the biomedical therapies that we traditionally use like anti-fungals, supplements, etc. can many times be stopped without a need to wean a child off of them.

Biomedical Autism Treatment - Intervention For Autistic Children

What is Biomedical Autism Treatment?

Biomedical autism treatment is the practice of treating the medical problems that can trigger autism and other disorders. * Heavy metals, food sensitivities, nutritional deficiencies, chronic infections, immune dysfunction and genetic susceptibilities are at the core of their health problems. When these health issues are identified and treated many children's autism condition either improves or goes away.

* Biological problems involving the brain, immune, digestive, hormone and biochemical systems are at the root for many children on the autism-spectrum. The key is to recognize that autism is reversible for many children.

* Some of the biomedical autism treatments include dietary intervention such as the gluten and casein-free diet, vitamin and mineral therapy, detoxification treatment including the removal of heavy metal toxins, digestive support therapy including bacterial and yeast eradication, hyperbaric oxygen therapy for ongoing neurological inflammation and poor oxygen circulation and more.

* It is totally false that there is no hope for recovery - Autism Is Treatable. Many children have the potential to improve and in some their autism can be reversed. Biomedical autism treatment can also improve the effectiveness of other therapies such as speech, occupation therapy and Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA). Many parents see a dramatic improvement in their child's response with these "traditional" autism interventions once they begin biomedical intervention.

Autism Treatment - How to Successfully Work With a Biomedical Autism Doctor

These suggestions have been acquired over the years in my practice and have helped me assist my patients greatly. Also, in talking with many other doctors working with families of a loved one with autism these recommendations often hold true as well. Working with a doctor who specializes in biomedical intervention for autism can be a challenging process for some parents.

Understanding that a particular doctor may be extremely busy and needs your help in assisting them help your child will go a long way in the treatment of your child. Here are some recommendations.

Journal - keep a running journal of your observations and timeline of therapies you are implementing.

Keep a spreadsheet of therapies.

Keep dates of when new therapies such as when supplements were started, stopped, and what reactions were seen (good or bad).

Recognize your child's patterns - situational, seasonal, time of day.

If added new therapies and problems are seen - then cut out some or all new therapies giving before reactions occurred, then reintroduce slowly to isolate which one was the potential culprit. Notify your doctor of these changes.

You will need to become a detective of your child's particular autism condition.

You know your child better than anyone - be involved 100%.

You are ultimately responsible for your own health and your child's health care.

Be prepared for your consultations with questions, concerns, and important topics you want to cover. Have these sent via fax or email prior to your consult.

Ask whether your practitioner receives faxes, emails, or voice mail regarding questions. Be prepared to pay for extra time. Most doctors will answer questions that are related to a new therapy introduced or quick follow-up questions to a recent visit.

Partnering with your practitioner also means having a relationship with the office staff. Treat them with respect. They are there to help.

Do not assume your doctor remembers every detail about your child - keep them informed.

If you change supplements by either removing or adding them let your practitioner know in writing via fax or email. This way they can keep a copy for their records.

Come prepared with your latest observations about your child.

Let your doctor know what different therapies, testing, etc. you want to explore.

Keep a running list of supplements, medications, calendar of therapy implementation, reactions to therapies.

Let your doctor know when you have sent off tests or if you are having problems getting tests samples collected. Some offices track follow-up appointments based on incoming tests results.

Biomedical Autism Intervention - Patience & Perseverance is the Key

A Biomedical Autism intervention Doctor Explains:

The implementation of biomedical therapies for individuals with an autism-spectrum disorder is process of both investigation and patience. The investigative part is determining effectiveness of a therapy versus another, and the patience aspect is critical because some therapies act more quickly than others, and learning to track progress both on a physical level and cognitive level is critical.

For example, for many individuals Methyl-B12 therapy can act very quickly with positive benefits seen in 4 to 6 weeks. Examples are better attention, more eye contact and more appropriate speech. Whereas, a treatment such as Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy - although it can be extremely beneficial - may take a several months before positive changes such as better language, more appropriate behavior, and improved immune function are recognized.

So, in order to implement biomedical autism treatments you have to be willing to try new remedies such as dietary changes, supplements, methylation support, detoxification therapy, etc. with your child, and be tenacious in tracking positive and/or negative changes to best determine which therapies help the most and which ones are ineffective.

This process is not always easy, and naturally overtime many parents will look back at the biomedical intervention they have done and know that positive things have happened - perhaps their child has more appropriate language, better awareness of their environment and are more engaging with family members, have improved behavior and less stemming.

What commonly occurs is that biomedical therapies will overlap and parents will be doing multiple therapies at once. You will reach a point where you're not quite sure what is working and what is not working. This is a natural trend in any health program and in most situations is unavoidable.

Biomedical intervention for autism-spectrum disorders is no different. At some point, many parents will start to back away from various treatments such as reducing supplement amounts or allowing for periodic gluten and/or milk consumption, etc. to see if any adverse reactions occur.

Every person is different and some individuals who have benefited greatly by biomedical intervention are able to handle less rigid programs without losing the positive gains that were made originally. Of course, this is very individualized and is done on a case-by-case basis. It is not uncommon to expect a few years of consistent and overlapping treatments to be in place before many individuals can have their program radically modified.

Biomedical Autism Intervention - Glutathione, Nature's Natural Detoxifier

A Biomedical Autism Intervention Doctor Explains: There is a biomedical therapy called "glutathione" that is shaping our way to prevent and treat a variety of disease conditions such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's Disease, and other chronic degenerative conditions. It is even very helpful for individuals with an autism-spectrum disorder. Glutathione is a major player in our bodies' defense against toxicity.

Toxins are one of the major challenges we all face living in modern society. We are constantly exposed to smog and other pollutants in the air (It has been shown that individuals with autism, as well other neurological conditions have difficulty eradicating toxins from their bodies). In fact, California - particularly S. California is a large depository for aerosolized mercury coming from China. China produces a large amount of mercury emission through their coal burning industry that travels the Gulf -Stream and accumulates along the western half of the United States. Mercury, of course, is a highly toxic metal with implications for neurological damage including exacerbating conditions such as heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's and even childhood disorders such as autism and attention-deficit disorder.

We are also exposed to various toxins in our food and water supply. Everything, from other metal toxins such as arsenic (from pesticide and herbicide run-off into ground water), lead and aluminum exposure, and chemical toxins such as PCB's, Bisphenal-A, and various plastics, teflons and more. These heavy metal and chemical toxins put a tremendous strain on our bodies' detoxification system overtime, and contributes to chronic ill-health and disease. Add to this a diet laden with artificial ingredients, refined sugars, and trans-fats and you can see how overtime people's health becomes comprised, and disease becomes so prevalent.

Our bodies can only handle so much toxic exposure before things breakdown. Genetic and hereditary factors play a role - as is the case in autism and related disorders, but for many people it is the accumulation of toxins overtime that create the ill-health state.

Biomedical Autism Treatment - The Incredible Benefits of Methyl B-12

A Doctor Explains The Effectiveness of Biomedical Autism Treatment:

Autism is treatable! This statement is true despite the erroneous claims made by many in our medical profession that children with autism-spectrum disorders (ASD) will "never recover."

That is wrong.
Through the use of biomedical autism treatment such as a type of B-vitamin called Methylcobolamin, many children with an autism spectrum disorder have recovered, while others have greatly improved their capacity in language, eye contact, social engagement, environmental awareness and more.

Children with autism process and respond to information in unique ways. In some cases, aggressive and/or self-injurious behavior may be present. Some of the more common traits of an autistic child are listed below:

  • Resistance to change
  • Repeats words or phrases in place of normal language
  • Prefers to be alone; aloof manner
  • Little or no eye contact
  • Sustained odd play
  • Spins objects or self-spins
  • Inappropriate attachments to objects
  • Apparent over-sensitivity/under-sensitivity to pain
  • Not responsive to verbal cues; acts as if deaf although hearing tests in normal range.

Biomedical autism treatment, including Methyl B-12 is a safe and effective therapy that can help a large percentage of kids.

Research has shown that certain biochemical abnormalities do not allow for ASD children to process and eliminate poisons such as mercury, lead and other environmental toxins. These same biochemical abnormalities also affect their immune system, and the normal production of brain chemicals. These imbalances are partly responsible for the language, focusing and attention problem commonly seen. Methylcobolamin (B12) significantly helps these areas. The key is using the right type of methylcobolamin with a proper concentration and administration.

James Neubrander, M.D. (www.drneubrander.com) has discovered that a subcutaneous injection (with an insulin needle) of methylcobolamin given in the buttocks is the most effective form. The injection is given every 3 days. Oral forms are available, but they are nowhere near as beneficial. The key to this therapy is that parents are giving the injections themselves. At first this may seem alarming, but even the most nervous parents quickly recognize that the injection is efficient, quick and painless. Many parents administer the injection while their children are asleep. This procedure has been safe and effective.

Fast Results

I have seen many children quickly respond with increased expressive language, eye contact, better attention and a willingness to socialize within the first 6 weeks of use. Approximately 60 to 70% of ASD children will have noticeable positive changes within the first 6 weeks while others are more subtle responders - but overall greater than 90% of children respond favorably. The use of methylcobolamin is truly an amazing therapy.

Please note that the methylcobolamin injections are only available by prescription and need to be ordered from a specialized compounding pharmacy.

Biomedical Autism Treatment Background
My approach to autism incorporates biomedical interventions such as the methylcobolamin injections. Biomedicine incorporates specialized diagnostic testing, dietary modification, nutritional supplements, medications, and. This approach comes from the knowledge that ASD children are dealing with medical issues that are compromising their health. I believe that autism and its related spectrum disorders are more than just a psychological condition without hope for recovery or improvement. In fact, my experience utilizing specialized diets such as gluten/casein-free, anti-yeast treatment, personalized supplements, methylcobolamin injections and more holds great promise for significant cognitive improvement and sometimes full recovery.

Using Methylation Chemistry for Autism Treatment

Methylation is a vital biochemical reaction in the body that supports the cardiovascular, hormone, immune, and detoxification systems, DNA/RNA structure and function, and other key metabolic system controlling energy production. It is commonly a problem in many autistic-spectrum individuals. There are some effective therapies, namely methylcobolamin therapy (injection, oral, sublingual), as well as other methylation supplements such as DMG and TMG.

The two most referenced chemical reactions in this methylation system are Re-methylation and Trans-Sulfuration.

Re-Methylation (or methylation) - this pathway involves the conversion of Homocysteine to Methionine. Methionine is a rate-limiting step for the production of other necessary chemicals which affect the heart and blood vessels, muscle tissue, immune and nervous system. The conversion of homocysteine to methionine can occur by direct transference of a methyl (CH3) groups from Methylcobalamin (B12) or betaine (trimethylglycine or TMG).

Homocysteine sits at a junction of two different biochemical reactions. Because of its position in this biochemical matrix it has the capacity to impact all methylation and sulfur group transference metabolic processes in the body. The most recognized impact of homocysteine is associated with increased risk for cardiovascular disease. However, in individuals with autism its impact affects other functions as well particularly cognition including concentration, attention, and language.

Trans-Sulfuration - this pathway involves degrading homocysteine to two different amino acids - taurine and cysteine. Taurine is most commonly known for cardiac support and liver support, detoxification, bile acid formation and cholesterol excretion. Cysteine has direct influence on glutathione production. Glutathione is a potent anti-oxidant and has broad reaching effects on the DNA/RNA protection, heavy metal detoxification, and immune function. Many children on the autistic-spectrum have deficiencies of both taurine and cysteine.

There are many intermediary steps involved in these two important biochemical reactions. Envision a wheel that is constantly spinning in a clockwise fashion. Homocysteine is at 6 o'clock and Methionine is at 12 o'clock. The goal is to get from 6 o'clock to 12 o'clock, and then from 12 o'clock to 6 o'clock. This keeps the wheel spinning in the right direction. Certain other chemicals will impact upon this wheel at specific points. If any one of these intermediary steps is blocked than the wheel slows down or stops. This causes a backlog of chemical information that has deleterious effects on our overall health.

Methylcobolamin, activated Folic Acid (called methyl-folate), and Betaine (TMG) are responsible for taking homocysteine from 6 o'clock to methionine at 12 o'clock. If one system is faulty (methylcobolamin/Folic acid) than betaine (TMG) can help out. SAMe (s-adenosylmethionine) the body's "universal methyl donor" helps take methionine from 12 o'clock to homocysteine at 6 o'clock. Along the way other important chemicals are being spun off in different directions to support the many dependent biochemical reactions in the body.

The problem with many autistic individuals is that this system does not operate properly severely compromising their immune, nervous, and detoxification systems. The impact can be enormous including increased chronic infections, inability to detoxify their body of chemicals and heavy metal toxins, and neuro-cognitive problems such as language processing, attention, focusing, and concentration. There appears to be a genetic component with many autistic individuals for having a problem with this methylation and trans-sulfuration chemisty. However, for many the problem does not become manifest until their system is negatively impacted upon from nutritional deficiencies, digestive problems from yeast, bacteria, parasites, malabsorption from digestive imbalances, heavy metal toxins from vaccines or environmental exposures.

Autism Treatment Biomedical Treatments for Adults With Autism

I would like to talk a little bit about something with respects to adults who are on the Autism spectrum. The issue is the word "cure" that has been used within the biomedical community for several years. Not all doctors use the word cure but also some individuals who use the word cure as a goal or potential for those with Autism. I understand that the use of this word has created controversy and/or sparked anger within our Autism community, especially from adults who have Autism.

I want to state my perspective clearly, I have never used the term "cure" in any of my dialog regarding the biomedical treatments for Autism. While I have seen people "recover" from the underlying medical issues they were dealing with, the term "cure" implies a complete change of the underlying personality or the issues that are occurring in someone with Autism. I choose not to use that word and can certainly understand the frustration or disagreement some individuals with Autism have with its use.

I see biomedicine as more than just a diet, giving supplements, or giving certain medications. It really is about exploring the clinical health of an individual. And many times there are underlying issues that need to be addressed like biochemical imbalances, vitamin and amino acid deficiencies, dietary allergies, digestive problems or whatnot, and when they are addressed you see changes in cognition and improvement in their quality of life, whether they are a child, teen or adult with Autism. We are talking about optimizing someone's health, not "cure", and to me, there is nothing wrong with trying to optimize someone's potential. I believe that improving the overall health of an individual should be the focus of every health pursuit, not to alter someone's personality. When you make these changes you find that the brain, immune system, gut, heart, lungs and body all function better.

The fact is that many people with Autism suffer from, for example, issues with their digestive tract. By addressing those issues you don't have "recovery" necessarily but you do have an individual who feels better. And when you decrease pain and discomfort in their gut, they can then digest food better and they have less bowel issues and function better. It almost goes without saying that if you remove the physical pains, you can increase mental capacity and mental harmony.

So I wanted to talk about these issues in adults with Autism because I mostly see children in my practice but I have worked with adults who face the same health challenges as the children. And occasionally I will see an adult with Autism who has a child on the spectrum as well which then can show you just how much these things go hand in hand. So it is all about optimizing health, improving function so that the individual is able to reach their full potential, whatever that may be. We don't have to use the term "cure" but rather we can talk about the improvement in health and functionality.

Biomedical Autism Treatment - Diet Helps Autistic Kids Get & Stay Healthy

For most kids getting periodic colds, congestion or upper respiratory infections (ear, sinus) is a normal part of growing up. However, children should not have to get sick at every exposure. If your child seems to develop an illness quite frequently, their immune system is likely in a weakened state. The goal then is not to prevent them from ever getting sick, but to reduce the frequency (and duration) of an illness. The way to accomplish this is through a strong immune system, and diet can play a big role in strengthening immune resistance to bacteria and viruses.

The following is a list of considerations to implement biomedical autism treatment to help support a health body and immune system for autism-spectrum children (ASD):

Whole Foods Diet - A whole foods diet contains quality sources of protein (poultry, fish, eggs, lean meats, beans, nuts, nut butters) lots of fresh fruits and veggies, nuts and seeds and high quality fats and oils such as flax oil, olive oil and coconut oil. You want to eliminate as many processed foods as possible - foods that are processed with chemicals, preservatives, additives, flavor enhancers, artificial colors and sweeteners, added sugar and hydrogenated oils.

Reduce Sugar - A tablespoon of refined sugar can suppress the immune system by 50% - in some cases for up to four hours. If your child is eating high sugar foods frequently throughout the day - candy, cookies, doughnuts, ice cream, soda, sugary cereals, and products with corn syrup or high fructose corn syrup - their immune system is likely suppressed all the time. If this is the case they are at a much greater risk of developing frequent illnesses.

Eliminate Dairy Products - Cow's milk dairy products can be mucous forming foods. Mucous in the mouth and respiratory tract provides a friendly medium for bacteria and other pathogens to grow. Many children on the autism-spectrum have a history of chronic ear and respiratory infections. They likely have an allergy to dairy. Eliminating the dairy has been found to significantly help children on the autism-spectrum - not only because of their immune weaknesses, but dairy products can also cause behavioral (tantrums, irritability) and cognitive (attention, focusing) problems as well.

Get More Essential Fats - Certain good fat sare called essential because our body cannot make them and we must get obtain them from our food. There are two types of essential fatty acids (EFAs) - omega 6 and omega 3. Most people get an abundance of omega 6 EFAs found in nuts, seeds, safflower, sunflower and corn oils. However, many ASD kids are not getting enough omega 3 EFAs. Sources high in omega 3 EFAs include fish oil, flax oil, krill oil and cod liver oil. EFAs are important for the immune system and help to regulate activity of white blood cells (T-cells and B-cells) that fight off infections.

Include Probiotics - Probiotics are beneficial bacteria. These include the common lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidobacter bifidus. These normal intestinal bacteria help to strengthen what is called the mucosal immune system. The mucosa of the mouth, respiratory and intestinal tracts are considered to be our first line immune defense. The mucosa helps to fend off invading pathogens once they have entered our body. Probiotics help to enhance the effectiveness of our mucosal immune system.

Whole Food Nutritional Supplement - A great way to obtain a wide variety of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, enzymes, etc. is to use powdered greens. There are a number of products available at most local health food stores that are good for kids.

One way of getting children to take supplements is mixing them in a smoothie. Listed here is an example of a great tasting and nutritious smoothie drink.

1 cup almond or rice milk

1-2 tablespoons flax oil or fish oil

1-2 tablespoons partially ground flax seeds

1-2 tablespoons powdered greens

2-3 capsules of probiotics

½ to 1 banana

Blended mixed frozen fruit - add as much as needed to obtain the consistency you feel your child will like (frozen strawberries, cherries, blueberries, mango, etc.). Mix well in blender. This will generally create 2 to 3 servings.

Don't let ANYONE tell you there is nothing you can do to help your child. Autism really is treatable! Start your child down the road to recovery from autism. How Music Therapy Helps In Treating Autism

Musical therapy is gaining acceptance in the field of treatments for autism. Individuals on the autism-spectrum who receive music therapy will often have improvement in overall temperament and learning abilities. I recently saw a young boy who loved the Beatles. Hearing their music has helped with his behavior and willingness to communicate. Other individuals have responded in similar ways to other types of music. Music makes connections to the non-verbal part of our brain making it a perfect therapy for disorders in which the person has trouble communicating. This is why it is a perfect fit for autism.

Music therapy has been used in conjunction to help with learning skills. Classical music often playing in the background has been shown to help with mental processing for math and complex problems, but more importantly in autism music in general provides a non-threatening medium for people while playing games that help to improve social and behavior skills. For example, by encouraging eye contact while singing or using musical instruments that need to be held close to the face musical therapy can help autistic individuals break social barriers. In short, music is fun and engaging.

The main thing that music therapy has been shown to help with is the development of speech and communication skills. Music has the ability to connect the verbal and non-verbal functions in the brain. This is critical in autism as speech difficulties are so significant. In the beginning certain individuals may be only able to hum, grunt or make non-word noises while others will babble phrases of verses. The little boy who was a Beatles fan learned to pronounce the famous line "we all live in a Yellow Submarine..." Autistic individuals will often gain the capability to put phrases and sentences together in attempts to communicate with other people. No matter how skilled the individual is with speech, they can participate in musical therapy by clapping to the beat of the song, humming along, or doing simple echoing sounds. It doesn't really matter just getting them involved in music can make powerful transformations.

Individuals on the autism spectrum are commonly found to be good at music. Some people have perfect pitch, while others may play a particular instrument very well. Even if they show no genius musical ability by common standards you may find that a particularly person has abilities in music that exceed his or her other abilities. A musical therapist can use music as a way to link this kind of learning with other kinds of learning skills such as communicating emotions or improving memory. Trained professionals can use music to teach children and others how to communicate in nonverbal ways, making it easier for patients to learn.

However, music doesn't need to be reserved for a therapy or a classroom setting. Play music in the home and/or car as a way to introduce new sounds, instruments, and voices into the auditory world for an autistic individual. Break out those Beatles albums and you never know what might emerge for a person on the spectrum. They too may find their favorite Beatles song and learn to sign and communicate in a way they never have before.

Treatment of Low Blood Sugar for Autism

Low blood glucose levels on blood tests is something I have seen from time to time in children on the Autism spectrum. Glucose is a fuel source, in the form of simple sugar, that our body and brain need to function appropriately. And while most test results come back in the normal range, which is between 80 and 100, occasionally they do come back higher, 105 to 110, and periodically I do see them in the 60's.

Hypoglycemia or low blood glucose, can be a temporary issue or it can be an ongoing, debilitating issue. Of course people with diabetes have the situation where their blood sugar goes very high and then goes very low when they have imbalances in insulin. Low blood sugar can impact many things in an individual including cognition, attention, focusing, it can even affect behavior and mood. If you see that your child gets moody throughout the day when they don't eat frequently, they may have reactive hypoglycemia or low blood sugar issues.

Now there are quite a few things you can do to help. One of the simplest things to do is to make sure your child is eating enough and eating frequently. This is especially true during times of growth spurts and their appetites have changed and they need more food. A snack is needed when there is a long stretch in the day between meals, like 3 to 4 hours. If your child goes to school then the school should be notified that your child requires a snack every half hour to every 2 hours to maintain their blood sugar level. Adults can do the same thing, just eat smaller meals more frequently. Another important thing is to stay away from many sweet treats and juices with lots of sugar. Insulin is released is response to the sugar and then you get a drop in blood sugar which can be problematic.

So really it comes down to balancing more carbohydrates with fats and oils and proteins to appropriately maintain blood sugar. Dietary interventions can also be very helpful to aid with insulin sensitivity. The mineral chromium can be helpful at 100 to 200 micrograms per day. And a multi-vitamin, multi-mineral and antioxidant supplement can also be helpful too.

But really the focus should be cutting back sugar, balancing proteins, balancing carbohydrates, balancing fats and balancing simple and complex sugars. Snacks in the morning and afternoon between meals allows your child to eat more frequently and that is helpful as well. So if you see this kind of behavior, big fluctuations with mood, focusing or attention, you may be seeing the manifestation of a blood sugar problem. And basically, your child just needs to eat.

Common Autism Treatments Reviewed

Autism is a developmental disability that affects both children and adults. The symptoms of autism are usually diagnosed within the first three years of the child's life. These symptoms may be more pronounced in some than others and will often affect both the social and communication abilities of the individual. When diagnosed with autism, the individual can benefit from many of the different treatment programs and educational programs available.

Biomedical

While there is no special drug to cure the symptoms, professionals, as well as parents, have found that some drugs that are often used for other disorders will help to alleviate some of the behavioral symptoms of autism.

For example, Serotonin re-uptake inhibitors have been used to help treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and anxiety. Through research it is found that there are elevated levels of serotonin in as many as one-third of those diagnosed with autism. Drugs such as Anafranil, Lenox, and Prozac may be able to reverse some of the symptoms of having high levels of serotonin, such as repetitive behaviors, irritability, and aggressive behavior. Some researchers found that autistic children may show increased eye contact and may become more responsive to others when taking these drugs.

Your child's physician may recommend other drugs, such as Ritalin, to help treat your child's symptoms. The main issue in treating the symptoms of autism with drugs is the side effects that may come along with certain medications. As with any medication being taken, you want to fully inform your child's physician about any side effects you may notice. It should also be stated that because children with autism may have a higher sensitivity to drugs, the dosages should be adjusted accordingly.

Vitamins

Many parents of autistic children and professionals feel that adjusting the child's diet and adding vitamins will help to treat the symptoms associated with autism. Research has proven that taking an increased amount of Vitamin C will help reduce the severity of symptoms, while others have shown that vitamin B and magnesium will help with the behavioral problems, improve their eye contact, and improve the autistic child's ability to pay attention. Professionals feel that due to malabsorption problems in those with autism, nutritional deficiencies may have an effect on how severe the symptoms are.

Before starting your child on a vitamin program, your child's physician should do an assessment of nutrition. This will help them to find out what your child is missing in vitamins and minerals to help to determine what they need and how it may help them.

Dietary

Individuals that have been diagnosed with autism sometimes may have sensitivity to certain foods, as well. Some of these may also contribute to certain behaviors. There are times that when certain substances are taken from the child's diet, it will alleviate some of these behaviors. One example of this is gluten. Researchers have found that if an autistic child has trouble breaking down the peptides of foods containing gluten and casein, found in diary products, wheat, oats, and rye, this may cause an upset of the biochemical and neurological processes of the brain. By removing these foods from the diet, it can reduce some of the autistic symptoms.

Behavioral

Due to the wide range of communication and behavioral symptoms that are associated with autism, there are a wide variety of behavioral treatments for individuals with autism. Many of these behavioral treatments for children with autism are based on the Applied Behavior Analysis. This theory focuses on rewarding good behavior.

The main thing to consider in choosing a behavioral treatment program for your autistic child is to understand their learning style. If your child is more visual, you may want to make sure the program is set up to assist your child in the way he or she learns best.

These are only a few of the treatments available for individuals diagnosed with autism. Because autism is unique in the sense that the symptoms vary according to the extent and severity, you and your child's physician will need to find a treatment program that works best for them. There are a lot of programs available for your child however, one program may be wrong for one child and perfect for another. Before starting your child in any program, seek the advice from your physician. He or she can test and assess your child to find out which treatments may help to alleviate some of your child's autism symptoms.

Biomedical Autism Treatment - Cerebral Folate Deficiency and Autism

More research is coming out about an issue in many children with Autism which deals with cerebral folate deficiency. Cerebral folate deficiency can cause issues with speech, cognition, awareness, focus, etc. and is something that can be treated.

Today I want to discuss folate, folinic acid, and some new research that is recently being released on cerebral folate deficiency in Autism. Cerebral folate deficiency has been known about in the medical community for a number of years. Children often have poor growth, speech problems, nervous system problems, attention issues, comprehension problems, and many times, at an early age, their heads stop growing normally. And when testing is done on children with these issues, what is called antibody testing, they discover these immune folate reactions that are happening to the folate transport receptors.

When we talk about folate uptake, and many times people think of folic acid, but to be effectively utilized by the brain for growth and development it must be transported through the blood, in the cerebral spinal fluid and then into the brain tissue. If there are antibodies that block those receptors then we have an issue where blood folate levels rise but the cerebral spinal fluid levels drop and then the issues with folate deficiency happen.

There is both past and current research validating the fact that a number of children with Autism have these folate transport receptor antibodies. My own testing with my patients has confirmed this trend also. Dr. Frye and Dr. Rossignol are both researchers and physicians involved in the biomedical field and they have been looking at this issue for a while. They are seeing marked improvements in areas like speech, focusing, attention, general awareness, etc. when these children are given high doses of folinic acid. These doses are more than what you would get in a regular supplement, it would be a prescription dose that is compounded. Many of these children have tried various biomedical therapies without responding very well so this is very exciting information.

I would suggest that you look more into this area. You can find more information on cerebral folate deficiency in Autism, especially from Dr. Frye and Dr. Rossignol. I think you would find it very worthwhile. My website, AutismActionPlan.com, also has much more information on cerebral folate deficiency and Autism in the parent forum. You can also post questions there each day to me on this topic or other biomedical issues relating to Autism.

Biomedical Autism Intervention - Autism and Aggressive Behavior - Part 2

A biomedical Autism Doctor Explains The Different Types of Aggressive Behaviors Displayed in Autistic Children In part 1 of this article on Aggressive Behavior and Autism I discussed some of the common issues seen with individuals on the autism-spectrum such as food sensitivities, intestinal issues and others that biomedical autism intervention and treatment can help. Here I explore these and other concepts more in-depth, and things you can do to assess your child's aggressive and/or self-injury behavior (SIB). Biomedical Autism Intervention - Assessing Your Child's Behavior The first thing to do is assess their pattern of aggression and/or SIB. The following is a list of things to consider. Does your child's behavior fall into one or more of these categories? Continuous - is the aggression and/or SIB almost continuous. In many individuals this can indicate pain - physical or emotional. For example, pain from constipation or intestinal cramping, infection such as the sinuses, headaches or even a tooth ache. I have seen kids who have aggressive behavior clearly because they do not feel well. Some individuals will bite themselves or hit their head as a way to deal with the pain. Biomedical autism intervention, treatment and assessment takes this into account and recognizes that underlying medical problems can be at the root of adverse behavior.

For example, years ago I saw a child who had almost constant head-banging and was hitting himself in the mouth. After a number of medications and visits with all kinds of experts it was assumed that this condition was just part of his autism. The child was finally referred to a dentist who determined he had dental cavities in the front of his mouth. The cavities were taken care of and his self-injury behavior resolved.

Intermittent - aggression that is intermittent can many times be associated with food sensitivities or food colorings and/or flavorings. For example, corn or corn derivatives, i.e. corn syrup for some kids can cause aggressive behavior. This happens quite commonly, and the affects of food sensitivities can go undetected for many years. Many times a trial of eliminating common food allergens such as wheat, dairy, corn, rice, citrus foods and others for 1 to 2 months, and then slowly reintroducing a food one at a time to see what the offending food(s) may be can help determine this common cause of adverse reactions.

Situational - this type of aggression is seen with a situation at school - such as a new classroom or other agitating situation. Some kids clearly do not like being told 'no' so they act out behaviorally. Other situations that cause anxiety such as crowded places like restaurants or shopping malls can contribute to behavior issues. Sound sensitivity is an issue for many individuals on the autism. Being in crowded places can be overwhelming to their brain causing irritability and tension.

Autism Symptom or Behavior Problem? One other issue is kids (as well as teenagers or adults) being aggressive to one parent versus the other. Is your child's aggression only focused to one parent or one ? I have seen kids who are aggressive to only women - such as mom, sister or an aunt. Evaluate your child's behavior in relationship to who they act out to. A child who is particular to one parent or one has developed a learned response that they can get away with aggressive behavior in this way. Usually, this is not a biomedical issue, but a behavioral problem and discipline is in order to stop this type of activity from continuing. If your child is displaying any of the above aggressive behaviors you should investigate biomedical autism intervention and treatment. Your child's behavior could be due to a medical problem that, when treated, could quite possible be eliminated.

Don't let ANYONE tell you there is nothing you can do to help your child. Autism really is treatable! Start your child down the road to recovery from autism. Biomedical Autism Treatment - Yes, it Could Help Your Autistic Child!

An Autism Doctor Explains The Many Benefits of Biomedical Autism Treatments:

Biomedical autism treatment is an expanding area of medicine that recognizes for the majority of autism-spectrum children, teenagers and adults, that they are dealing with underlying medical issues that are at the root cause of their autism condition. Specialists such as physicians, scientists, general healthcare practitioners, and parents have known for years that biomedical autism treatment works for a large majority of autism individuals. These biomedical autism treatments include diet, supplement therapy, immune support, and more.

The main areas of improvement are the following:

* Better cognitive skills - learning, memory retention, etc.

* Improved social skills - more appropriate interactions, willingness to engage socially.

* Better eye contact, attention, focusing enhanced.

* More stable behaviors - less aggressive, tantrums, and irritability

* Improved capacity for speech development*

* Increased environmental awareness

* Less self-stimulatory behavior

For years "traditional" medical practitioners only describes autism as a neuro-developmental disorder. Their limited scope of treatment involves psychiatric medications, and behavioral therapies. However, the biomedical field understands that autism is more than just a brain disorder. It views autism as a multi-system disorder that adversely affects the brain. Multi-system means the immune, digestion, hormone, detoxification and blood chemistry systems all play an interactive role in many cases of autism Imbalances, deficiencies and dysfunctions in the normal functioning of these body systems can adversely affect a person's health and brain function leading to what we call autism or an autism-spectrum disorder. When an autistic individual is assessed medically, and their multiple underlying medical issues are addressed through biomedical autism treatment, many times their autism condition can improve or completely go away. The medical community that addresses autism this way by implementing biomedical autism biomedical treatment recognizes that autism is treatable and actually reversible for many individuals on the autism-spectrum.

Don't let ANYONE tell you there is nothing you can do to help your child. Autism really is treatable! Start your child down the road to recovery from autism. Autism Treatment Using Biomedical Therapies

Previously in other videos I have talked about therapies that are considered traditional treatments for Autism spectrum disorders like medications such as Risperdal and therapies like speech therapy, occupational therapy and behavioral therapy. Now I would like to cover something called biomedical therapies. Biomedical therapies are therapies that are utilized medically but are not what we would consider a recognized therapy in traditional medical communities. However, that does not reduce their effectiveness since these therapies can be very effective. They may not be well known or recognized throughout the medical world but biomedical therapies really break down into multiple categories.

The first category we will cover is supplements. We have seen that using various supplements like multi-vitamins, multi-minerals, B-12, folic acid, etc. can be helpful for some individuals. In fact, B-6 which is a specific vitamin, can be very helpful for quite a few individuals on the Autism spectrum because it has a bolstering effect on brain chemistry that can aid in eye contact, focusing, attention and even in some cases, behavioral problems.

There are also therapies out there that address the digestive problems that many children with Autism have. We know there is a link between digestive toxicity and brain function. So when we look at yeast and bacterial issues in the digestive tract and we use things like probiotics or prescriptions like Nystatin, Diflucan or even sometimes antibiotics to treat these issues, we see children improve cognitively.

We can also intervene biomedically through the use of dietary therapy. Once of the most common dietary therapy is the gluten and casein free diet. Gluten and casein can produce a chemical effect on the brain. We have seen issues with this in regards to individuals with depression, schizophrenia and bi-polar disorder. And for people on the Autism spectrum we also see that these specific food proteins have a negative impact on brain chemistry and cause problems in attention, eye contact, socialization, language and behavior.

So although biomedical therapies tend to fall outside of the norm from the perspective of the traditional medical community, they can be incredibly powerful and useful. Biomedical therapies are medical interventions through the use of supplements, dietary therapies, digestive interventions, etc. They can help support traditional therapies like ABA, OT and speech therapy and in many cases can be even more powerful than those other interventions. So it is very important to remain open minded about other possibilities and to continue to learn and search out new ways to support individuals with Autism. There are so many treatment avenues and I have just touched on a few of them in this video.

Don't let ANYONE tell you there is nothing you can do to help your child. Autism really is treatable! Start your child down the road to recovery from autism. Biomedical Autism treatments and therapies have resulted in many, many children improving, or even even losing their autism-spectrum disorder diagnosis.
