Fish Oil Supplements - How To Cope With Autism By Taking Omega 3 Fish Oil

Omega 3s effects on the function of the brain are well documented. The elderly find it gives them better memory and ability to focus. Childhood ailments like ADHD are minimized with a daily supplement.

People who sustain serious brain injuries have made miraculous recoveries when they take high dosages of fish oil supplements. Depression and other mental illnesses often are improved with omega 3 fish oil. The list continues to expand to include other sicknesses and conditions.

Autism is no exception. The causes of autism are still hotly debated. But while everyone else fights, omega 3 quietly is improving the lives of those with autism and their loved ones.

The brain is made up of fat and it has been discovered that omega 3 fatty acids are necessary for proper development. Pregnant women are now advised to take a pure fish oil supplement along with their prenatal vitamin.

The gestational period is an important time for neural development and omega 3 plays a big role in that. That need continues into infancy. Breast milk contains up to 1% omega 3 fatty acids. The need for continued supplementation into childhood is now being recognized. Autism is another place where children are benefiting from omega 3 in their diets.

Autism comes with many symptoms. All together they can be quite debilitating for the patient and exhausting for the caretakers. Fish oil supplements can help out in a number of ways. Cognitive skills are sharpened and communication improves. Memory and learning capabilities also increase.

Children and adults can concentrate better with an omega 3 supplements. Autistic children develop a longer attention span. The speech and intellect of an autistic person is improved. They sleep better. Aggression and hyperactivity are soothed. These children become more adaptable and social. Emotions are leveled to a workable state.

Fish oil supplements provide necessary nutrients to the human body that it cannot produce itself. Whatever the causes of autism end up being, it is apparent that omega 3 has a very positive effect on bringing out the best an autistic child has to offer.

The person that is inside can better be expressed without all the interference of symptoms of the autism. Buy a purified omega 3 fish oil supplement to decrease the worry of further injuring the autistic person. Omega 3 can give them a new chance to approach life. Quality of life increases as the omega 3 does its thing.

Treatment of Autism - The Important Roles of Vitamins and Minerals in Effectively Treating Autism

Autism is a disorder that affects the individual's communicative and language ability. This disease often affects children before their third birthdays. The exact cause of the disorder is yet to be proven by medical science.

Autism makes the autistic patient to speak incoherently and continuously display behaviors that are inimical to common behavior. Thus, autism symptoms are related to those of other Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD). It will interest you to know that in autism treatment centers, this disease is also known as autism spectrum disorder.

Autism cure is still eluding researches that have been carried out for many years. However, autism is treatable because some of the risk factors have been identified. Among other risk factors, it has been diagnosed that the autistic lacks certain vitamins and minerals in their body. To be specific, there has been low level of minerals like magnesium, calcium, chromium and folic acid in the blood of children with autism. Also, vitamins like vitamin C, vitamin B, etc are seen to be lacking in the blood of those who are diagnosed with the disorder.

To handle this situation, autism research papers presented in the past have revealed that children and adults with autism have shown significant improvement when supplements of vitamins and minerals are used in treating them. Yes, when the children were treated with thylglycine and niacin supplements.

In some autism treatment options, oral secretin is administered to the patient with a combination of vitamins and minerals are very effective in treating and controlling autism. They can be termed as Autism Spectrum Disorder/Cures used these days.

Bound in a Soft-Gel: The Facts Behind Autism and Omega-3 Supplements

"I could be bound in a nutshell, and count myself king of infinite space, were it not that I have bad dreams." You can't help but wonder whether Shakespeare knew anything of autism when he wrote this line, or how his young son Hamnet met his demise.

We live in a relatively enlightened age now, but for the less informed ones amongst us, the autistic spectrum is just another name for a dungeon of ignorance from which there is no escape. The word spectrum means a lot here, because it marks the fluidity of the disease and reminds us so-called "neurotypicals" how little we know about it. (Autism actually comprises three different things - autistic spectrum, Asperger's, and a third catch-all condition whenever the textbooks are silent.)

The loss of language through brain trauma is debilitating in itself, but when the faculty is perceived to have never quite developed according to our standards, the human toll is catastrophic, not only to the lives of those afflicted, but their parents as well. This is not to say that autistic children are incapable of communication, or indeed, that they haven't established a separate and mutually unintelligible system of thought. We simply don't know.

For instance, one of the biggest challenges in child development is the construction of a "theory of mind", which is the way a person distinguishes the self from the other. Its imperceptibility means most of us take it for granted; but in the autistic child's case, it might happen, it might not, and the parent might never find out.

In the absence of standard pharmaceutical treatments, frustrated parents are trying everything that comes their way. The vast majority of complementary medicine have yet to demonstrate statistically significant results in clinical trials. However, this is not a verdict against experimenting with them as such, because the scope of potential measures is so wide as to swamp researchers in the field.

Take, for instance, omega-3 fatty acid supplements, more commonly known as fish oils and long championed as an antidote against cardiovascular diseases. Over a hundred small-scale studies have been conducted in conjunction with its benefits in language development amongst autistic children, for two simple reasons. An active form of omega-3, DHA, is present in the human brain, and its deficiency has been associated with a wide variety of neural disorders. There is also anecdotal reports from parents, who perceive an improvement in lexicon and awareness when their autistic children have been put on a long-term regime of omega-3 supplements.

Granted, these results are far from conclusive, and researchers are proceeding at a snail's pace. (Ethics committees are reluctant to tamper with a child's neurological development at such a tender age through clinical trials - heads may roll unless they have strong circumstantial evidence.) So in the meantime, let's stick to proven dietary supplements and hope for the best. For a treatment that comes with absolutely no risk, it can make quite a difference.

Using Methylation Chemistry for Autism Treatment

Methylation is a vital biochemical reaction in the body that supports the cardiovascular, hormone, immune, and detoxification systems, DNA/RNA structure and function, and other key metabolic system controlling energy production. It is commonly a problem in many autistic-spectrum individuals. There are some effective therapies, namely methylcobolamin therapy (injection, oral, sublingual), as well as other methylation supplements such as DMG and TMG.

The two most referenced chemical reactions in this methylation system are Re-methylation and Trans-Sulfuration.

Re-Methylation (or methylation) - this pathway involves the conversion of Homocysteine to Methionine. Methionine is a rate-limiting step for the production of other necessary chemicals which affect the heart and blood vessels, muscle tissue, immune and nervous system. The conversion of homocysteine to methionine can occur by direct transference of a methyl (CH3) groups from Methylcobalamin (B12) or betaine (trimethylglycine or TMG).

Homocysteine sits at a junction of two different biochemical reactions. Because of its position in this biochemical matrix it has the capacity to impact all methylation and sulfur group transference metabolic processes in the body. The most recognized impact of homocysteine is associated with increased risk for cardiovascular disease. However, in individuals with autism its impact affects other functions as well particularly cognition including concentration, attention, and language.

Trans-Sulfuration - this pathway involves degrading homocysteine to two different amino acids - taurine and cysteine. Taurine is most commonly known for cardiac support and liver support, detoxification, bile acid formation and cholesterol excretion. Cysteine has direct influence on glutathione production. Glutathione is a potent anti-oxidant and has broad reaching effects on the DNA/RNA protection, heavy metal detoxification, and immune function. Many children on the autistic-spectrum have deficiencies of both taurine and cysteine.

There are many intermediary steps involved in these two important biochemical reactions. Envision a wheel that is constantly spinning in a clockwise fashion. Homocysteine is at 6 o'clock and Methionine is at 12 o'clock. The goal is to get from 6 o'clock to 12 o'clock, and then from 12 o'clock to 6 o'clock. This keeps the wheel spinning in the right direction. Certain other chemicals will impact upon this wheel at specific points. If any one of these intermediary steps is blocked than the wheel slows down or stops. This causes a backlog of chemical information that has deleterious effects on our overall health.

Methylcobolamin, activated Folic Acid (called methyl-folate), and Betaine (TMG) are responsible for taking homocysteine from 6 o'clock to methionine at 12 o'clock. If one system is faulty (methylcobolamin/Folic acid) than betaine (TMG) can help out. SAMe (s-adenosylmethionine) the body's "universal methyl donor" helps take methionine from 12 o'clock to homocysteine at 6 o'clock. Along the way other important chemicals are being spun off in different directions to support the many dependent biochemical reactions in the body.

The problem with many autistic individuals is that this system does not operate properly severely compromising their immune, nervous, and detoxification systems. The impact can be enormous including increased chronic infections, inability to detoxify their body of chemicals and heavy metal toxins, and neuro-cognitive problems such as language processing, attention, focusing, and concentration. There appears to be a genetic component with many autistic individuals for having a problem with this methylation and trans-sulfuration chemisty. However, for many the problem does not become manifest until their system is negatively impacted upon from nutritional deficiencies, digestive problems from yeast, bacteria, parasites, malabsorption from digestive imbalances, heavy metal toxins from vaccines or environmental exposures.

Children, Autism and Probiotics

Drug treatments for people with autism can be very harsh toward, and kill off the beneficial or "probiotic" bacteria that live in their intestines. This upsets the balance in the intestines causing discomfort and frustration - usually in the form of diarrhea or constipation. Supplemental probiotics restore balance and regularity which means less discomfort and more pleasant days and nights.

It's not some kind of magic; it's simple physics: 2 objects cannot occupy the same space at the same time. When supplemental probiotics are introduced into the diet of someone who is on a regimen of drugs for ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder), the probiotics are given the "upper hand", allowing them to occupy more space than the harmful bacteria that cause intestinal distress. As anyone who has ever suffered from intestinal distress can tell you, it's miserable. Possibly the only thing worse than intestinal distress, is intestinal distress experienced by someone who already has other things causing them misery.

Another way probiotics help someone with autism is by maintaining the integrity of intestinal surfaces. Healthy intestinal surfaces are far more able to keep undigested foods from "leaking" into the gut causing complex and unpleasant reactions that can result in food allergies and other health issues. Since the drugs used for ASD cause leaky gut in almost everyone they're used on, it is extremely important to control the situation with a therapeutic dose, high quality probiotic.

Not only should the probiotic, be of high quality and potency, it should also be easy to administer. Recent product developments and improvements have created a marriage of potency, quality and ease of delivery. Some are so easy to use it takes nothing more than folding a small amount into applesauce or other soft food and serving it.

As probiotic research continues, technology advances and awareness is raised, there may come a day when most, if not all with ASD who suffer from intestinal discomfort can finally find relief.

Autism Treatment Biomedical Treatments for Adults With Autism

I would like to talk a little bit about something with respects to adults who are on the Autism spectrum. The issue is the word "cure" that has been used within the biomedical community for several years. Not all doctors use the word cure but also some individuals who use the word cure as a goal or potential for those with Autism. I understand that the use of this word has created controversy and/or sparked anger within our Autism community, especially from adults who have Autism.

I want to state my perspective clearly, I have never used the term "cure" in any of my dialog regarding the biomedical treatments for Autism. While I have seen people "recover" from the underlying medical issues they were dealing with, the term "cure" implies a complete change of the underlying personality or the issues that are occurring in someone with Autism. I choose not to use that word and can certainly understand the frustration or disagreement some individuals with Autism have with its use.

I see biomedicine as more than just a diet, giving supplements, or giving certain medications. It really is about exploring the clinical health of an individual. And many times there are underlying issues that need to be addressed like biochemical imbalances, vitamin and amino acid deficiencies, dietary allergies, digestive problems or whatnot, and when they are addressed you see changes in cognition and improvement in their quality of life, whether they are a child, teen or adult with Autism. We are talking about optimizing someone's health, not "cure", and to me, there is nothing wrong with trying to optimize someone's potential. I believe that improving the overall health of an individual should be the focus of every health pursuit, not to alter someone's personality. When you make these changes you find that the brain, immune system, gut, heart, lungs and body all function better.

The fact is that many people with Autism suffer from, for example, issues with their digestive tract. By addressing those issues you don't have "recovery" necessarily but you do have an individual who feels better. And when you decrease pain and discomfort in their gut, they can then digest food better and they have less bowel issues and function better. It almost goes without saying that if you remove the physical pains, you can increase mental capacity and mental harmony.

So I wanted to talk about these issues in adults with Autism because I mostly see children in my practice but I have worked with adults who face the same health challenges as the children. And occasionally I will see an adult with Autism who has a child on the spectrum as well which then can show you just how much these things go hand in hand. So it is all about optimizing health, improving function so that the individual is able to reach their full potential, whatever that may be. We don't have to use the term "cure" but rather we can talk about the improvement in health and functionality.

Treatment of Autism - The Importance of Supplements That Many People Overlook

Autism is kind of disorder that affects the social and behavioral skills of children. This syndrome usually manifests when the child is an infant, especially during his or her third birthday. The child with autism finds it difficult to communicate effectively and this is can be frustrating to those around, especially the parents.

The cause of autism has been attributable to many factors, though some of these have been controversial. For example, the issue that vaccination causes autism has been controversial since the report was made public. Also, in the past the term 'the refrigerator mothers' was coined to reflect the fact that bad parenting is one of the causes of autism in children. This has equally not gone down well with autism research.

There have been some treatment options administered to the autistic patient and some of the treatment options may include vitamins and nutritional supplements. This is not to say that nutritional supplements are the perfect treatment or cure for the syndrome. There are other medications, which the physician can prescribe for the child. Oral secretin and thylglycine, and niacin are some of the supplements that can be administered to the child with autism.

Many people who used such supplements on their autistic children insist that they discovered remarkable changes in the condition. That seems to be the reason why more parents are advised to use these supplements. But of course, before taking any supplement for autism, talk to your doctor to recommend the best one. Your doctor knows best about these and should be in the best position to tell you the specific types to give to your child.

Autism Supplements Treatment - Brain Chemistry Imbalances

Brain chemical support is a target therapy for many psychiatric or neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Multiple Sclerosis, as well as Bipolar Depression or Schizophrenia. Autism treatment is no different. In autism, including those with various spectrum issues such as attention deficit, sensory processing and/or speech language delay or pervasive development disorder supplement treatment can help improve an individual's ability to function more optimally.

The following list of supplements I have as autism treatments for years in my practice to help support healthy brain chemistry. This is not imply that these following supplements are the only things available for brain chemistry support, but these often show nice benefits with respects to improved attention, focusing, and overall cognitive skills. Each supplement is unique and often they work synergistically to provide optimal results:

Nutritional Lithium - micro-mineral involved in supporting brain health. Nutritional Lithium has been used for states of brain stress, cognitive problems, aggressive behavior, irritability, mood instability. Lithium also helps protect the brain against various toxins. Typical dose is 500 to 1000mcg daily.

5-HTP - Amino acid that helps support serotonin production. Serotonin is necessary for mood control, helps with states of depression, and sense of well being. Serotonin is also supportive for melatonin production which is involved in promoting sleep. Typical dose is 50 to 100mg daily.

Methylcobalamin (methyl-B12) - Methyl-B12 is useful for focusing, attention and general awareness issues in autism. It can assist with speech and language problems as well. It is also helpful in other neurological disorders too. Typical dose is 1000 to 2000mg daily. Can come in various forms such as nasal spray, subcutaneous injections and oral liquid.

Vitamin B6 - A member of the B-vitamin family that is helpful for general cognitive awareness, better attention, improved mood and biochemical support throughout the body. Should be used along with magnesium to prevent against hyperactivity. Typical dose is 4 to 8 mg per pound of vitamin B6 in conjunction with 2 to 4mg per pound body weight of magnesium.

Autism and Food Supplements

Today, there are a very large number of food supplements on the market. These products can help us to be healthier by giving our bodies the added nutrients they need. It is especially important for people with autism to have a proper diet, because they are more likely to have problems with nutrition than most of us. It can be very helpful for them to take supplements to help balance their nutritional state.

Two proteins that have been found to potentially worsen the symptoms of autism are gluten and casein. In many autistic children gluten and casein, seem to cause the production of natural opiates in the brain. This can make foods that contain these proteins practically addictive! For this reason, the first step toward treating autism with food supplementation is to adopt a diet free of gluten and casein.

Of course, having a healthy balanced diet is very important. Because autistic children are usually very affected by routines, a healthy diet should be instituted and followed as early as possible. When this is done, autistic children will usually continue to adhere to a healthy diet.

It is also important to determine if your autistic child is absorbing the proper amount of nutrients. A doctor can determine this with Simple blood tests that measure nutrient levels. This data can then be used to adjust a diet if it turns out there are any shortfalls. Medical professionals who have been trained to understand the challenges that autistic children face are a good place to start.

A list of nutrients that autistic children often do not have at optimum levels or may simply be lacking includes: calcium, selenium, zinc, magnesium, folic acids, essential fatty acid, vitamins C and E, taurine, cod liver oil, and various amino acids.

It is important to move slowly when beginning a regimen of supplements. It is also very important to document any changes in behavior. Be very attentive to the effects of the supplements seem to have on your child. Be sure to note any changes and be prepared to discuss them with your doctor or nutritionist.

Both positive and negative effects can result from the changes in diet and use of supplements. Positive effects can sometimes be seen in reduced severity of behaviors. Often, autistic children show improvement in their ability to manage their behaviors and interact socially. Undesirable changes in behavior may also be noted, however. If negative behavior changes are observed, the supplement that was added should be reduced or eliminated. Determining the best diet and what supplements to use for an autistic child is mostly done by trial and error. For that reason, you should start with small packages when purchasing supplements. In the long run you can save you money by buying in bulk quantities. If you were to buy a large quantity of a supplement and then find that it produces undesirable results, you would be stuck with a product that is useless to you.

If you decide to add supplements to your child's diet, it is important to do so in a controlled manner. You should not just dole out supplements on a random basis. Instead, work with your doctor or nutritionist to develop a specific plan that is designed for your child's success. The plan should include stool analysis, frequent tests for metal toxicity, and tests for various amino acids and peptides.

There is a great deal to consider when choosing supplements for your child. This is a very important process that can greatly improve the quality of your child's life. You should take your time with the process and be sure to cover all the bases as you go. Be sure to give supplements time to work. It often takes time for the body to accurately process nutrients and for you to see any changes in behavior.

Fish Oils For Autism – How Taking The Right Fish Oils For Autism Can Increase a Childs Development by Rich Hawkins

There has been much discussion about fish oils for autism and the results of recent research show how this oil can really help to improve in many areas of an autistic child's development. Let's look at how it works and how to select the most effective and safe one.

Scientists have discovered that over two-thirds of those with the condition, which restricts the ability to communicate and make sense of the world, have a deficiency in crucial omega 3 fatty acids which quality fish oils for autism can replace.

It is now known that omega 3 fatty acids play a key role in the health of our children's neurological development. The two main ones are DHA and EPA and it is now accepted that DHA is responsible for most of the health benefits.

Our brains are composed of over 30% DHA fats to illustrate just how important they are and it is estimated that over 90% of us are deficient in them as we cannot manufacture them ourselves so it must come from our diet.

In a recent study by two American researchers (Patrick-Salik), children diagnosed with autism were given a daily supplement of fish oil/borage oil for 90 days. At the end of 90 days, the children on the fish oil supplements showed significant improvements in their language and learning abilities.

Trials like these and the results many parents have found show just how important fish oils for autism really are, even though more research is needed.

They have already been proven to significantly improve brain health and mental well-being in adults, and with autistic kids the main ones are noticeable improvements in speech and comprehension, better sleep patterns, and less hyperactivity and anxiety.

Obviously every child is individual so whilst many parents see an improvement, some may not.

I have been an avid fan and researcher of fish oils for a long time and when my own three year old son was diagnosed with mild autism some months ago, he went straight onto these oils as you can imagine!

I noticed after about six weeks of taking a daily supplement his speech and how he was using the words was much improved as was his general ability to make sense of what was going on around him, and it was nice when family and friends also commented on this.

One of the hurdles I see facing parents is how to give your child these supplements. The one I use is extremely pure and has only a faint ocean aroma so as my son will not swallow pills, I simply cut one open and put it in his morning juice which works great, and you can put them into their food too.

I personally do not use special ones for kids as they tend not to be as good and have many additives to make them more palatable. A high amount of DHA is vital and I would recommend at least 250 mg of DHA per capsule, twice the amount of EPA.

Also ensure they have undergone molecular distillation to remove all the impurities like lead and mercury to make the fish oils for autism totally safe otherwise your child may be ingesting these harmful toxins.

There is no doubt in my mind that high quality pure and safe fish oils for autism can really help to improve the quality of life for these children and with all the other health benefits they bring, it's no wonder they are so popular.
