What Is Autism Disorder- Revealed

Many parents hope that in finding a cause of autism disorder, that the disorder might be cured or prevented. Sadly, scientists have yet to discover one single cause why children develop autism. It is possible that one day autism will be linked to a particular gene irregularity, but the more probable source is just not one thing, but a variety of factors in a child's world. Autism can't be prevented or cured, so the best we can do to help autistic children and adults is to be considerate and willing to compromise to make the world comfortable for them and ourselves.

First off, there are specific things that don’t cause autism disorder, and these misconceptions should be set to rest at once.
Myth 1: Terrible parenting will not cause autism. In the past, mothers were blamed for traumatizing their children with remote parenting methods, which was thought to lead to autism. This is simply not true.

Myth 2: Autism is not caused by undernourishment, although food allergy symptoms transpire in a lot of autistic kids and some autistic kids do have the benefit of taking daily vitamins.

So what then is the trigger for autism disorder?

There are numerous links between autism and the brain. Most of the people with autism disorder have bigger brains and they're "wired" in a different way than a typical brain. Variations take place in lots of parts of the brain, so it can't be targeted to one specific brain malfunction overall, but rather a brain malfunction in general.

Autistic children and adults show signs of an immune deficiency. Confirmation with this study is not yet clear-cut, but research is ongoing. A lot of autistic people have other health problems associated with immune deficiencies. Generally, these items all seem to point to genetics.

Although autism disorder is not the parents' fault, it's probable that autism was encountered elsewhere on your family tree, plus it isn't uncommon for parents to raise more than one autistic child.

Autism disorder may be associated to vaccinations, although this being highly studied. The advantages of vaccinations very much outweigh the risks of them causing autism, so you mustn't deprive your youngster just because you happen to be afraid. Talk to your doctor if you have concerns about vaccinations.

Nobody understands what causes autism disorder. For that reason, we can't do anything to prevent and cure it, but rather we can simply care for the autistic people in our lives with the very best of our ability. Autism is a complex problem, and as researchers develop new understandings of the way in which it impacts the body, improved treatment options will become available, aided by the hopefulness that one day we will be in a position to cure this disease.

Becoming educated in autism disorder is essential as the more you know regarding the abnormal condition, the better you will help people who are afflicted by it, or in some cases, to better help yourself if you suffer from autism disorder.

Types of Therapy For Autism

Autism is a disorder that affects children usually around 2 to 3 years old. The child seems to develop normally, and then symptoms begin to appear. They begin to lose language and social skills. Symptoms can be mild to severe.

There are different types of therapies designed to help individuals and their families who are affected by autism. Play therapy is one type of therapy in which parents learn to interact with their children. Children learn to share and play with others through this therapy as well. Children can learn to interact properly with other children and adults, which is very hard for an autistic person.

Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is another form of therapy. A one-on-one teaching method is used to teach the patient skills. It is fairly expensive and is applied by a behavioral psychologist. It is mainly used to teach an autistic child normal developmental functions.

Relationship Development Intervention is a form of therapy used to develop social and life skills. It teaches autistic individuals to share, learn problem solving, improve in self awareness, and learn how to be responsive. It sets the groundwork for the patient to be able to function on his or her own at some point.

Autism, although not curable, is treatable. Be sure to find a qualified therapist to guide your autistic child. The earlier the better in treating an individual so that social skills may be properly developed. Funding is not readily available for these programs as they are not widely accepted as of yet. It can be expensive, but it highly worth it to enable an autistic child to develop as normally as possible.

Types of Autism - The Different Types of Autism

There are five distinct types of Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD) that are considered to be related to Autism because of the neuro development portions that have been identified under the Autism Spectrum. They are Autism Disorder, Asperger's Syndrome, Rett's Disorder, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder, and Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (PDDNOS).

Each of the five disorders are classified as pervasive in nature rather than Specific Development Disorders (SDD) because they are characterized by multiple disabilities in a variety of areas rather than focused on one particular issue. Let's take a brief look at each of the five types of Autism on an individual level. While many of the characteristics may be similar, the differences are distinct enough for them to fall under different categories.

Classic Autism, commonly called Autism, is also sometimes called Kanner's Syndrome after the Psychiatrist Leo Kanner. He studied 11 children at John Hopkins University from 1932 to 1943. He wrote about the common elements found in these children including a lack of emotion, repetitive actions, and problems with their speech formation, their ability to manipulate various objects, learning difficulties, and their levels of intelligence. His studies lead to many others wanting to learn more about the disorder.

Asperger's Syndrome is named after its founder, Hans Asperger. His studies took place in Vienna in 1944. He discovered many individuals had the problems with social skills and repetitive patterns but they did not have trouble with learning or their cognitive abilities. They also portrayed some very exceptional talents or abilities that were considered to be very remarkable. Albert Einstein is a very famous individual who had Asperger's Syndrome.

Dr. Andrease Rett documented what is known As Rett's Syndrome while in Australia in 1965. This is classified as a neuro developmental degenerative disorder. It only affects girls and the degeneration results in them being completely dependent on others for all of their needs. They have some of the symptoms of Autism but they also suffer from muscle lose. Girls with Rett's Syndrome often have very small hands and feet.

Childhood Disintegrative Disorder (CDD) is also called Heller's Syndrome after the teacher Theodore Heller. He first described the disorder in 1908. The characteristics include the child having a normal pattern of development but then has a regression of skill as they get older.

Any type of neuro disability that doesn't fall into the above categories is classified as PDDNOS. While individuals in this particular category experience very mild symptoms they suffer greatly in the area of social interactions. The proper diagnosis is necessary so that the proper therapies and techniques can be properly introduced.

Stereotype in Autism and Reality

This article is based on strong theoretical, logical and professional foundation of the Author. Autism has been a special area of concern for many since Dr. Leo Kanner a Psychiatrist at John's Hopkins University, who wrote the first paper using the term "Autism" in 1943 referring a group of Children who exhibited similar kinds of symptoms related to social, communication and behavioural problems.

Basically the term Autism has been referred to a person exhibiting problems in social abilities and communication. Most of the professionals agree that Autism is a life long developmental disabilities resulting due to gross neurological disorder which affects the functioning of the brain. Prevalence of Autism is said to be one in every 500 people and male female ratio is 4:1. In due course of time based upon the group of symptom exhibited by the children it has been grouped into four types;
1) Aspergers syndrome
2) Rett disorder
3) Heller syndrome
4) Pervasive developmental disorder.

The types of Autism are not based on Etiology but on symptomatology. However there are several theories and hypothesis to explain the cause of Autism such as i) Genetics ii) Viral infection iii) Toxins. Other causes have also been explained to be the caused of Autism such as metabolic disorder etc.

Autism is called as spectrum disorder and necessarily it should occur during early childhood. Spectrum refers to a group of characteristics exhibited in the child and the diagnosis of Autism is based upon these characteristics. However the basic criteria is predominately social factors and communication skills i.e. impaired language development. Apart from these other features such as repetitive behaviour, impaired imitation, lack of eye contact, insistence of sameness, absence of social play, lack of social rule, abnormal response to sensori stimulation, impaired ability to perform special skill et.

The treatment or therapy of Autism is directed towards eliminating the symptoms through planned and structured activities by the therapist. Therapy of Autism is always a team work of Speech and Language Pathologist, Special Educators, Occupational Therapist and Psychologist primarily and other experts such as Physician, neurologists etc.

Whenever a therapy is planned on the basis of symptoms rather than the Etiology it is liable to be less effective and may not give desired out come.

My personal experiences of 32 years and theoretical foundation have given me insight about the Autism in a different way. I have encountered with almost 500 cases with Autism and concluded the most acceptable theory of sensory disintegration with a logical explanation and conclusion.

The theory is based on the cognitive factors derived from the sensory organ of the child. God has gifted us with sensory organs to acquire knowledge on the basis of experiences received from them and develop cognition and act through our motor organs on the basis of our knowledge and cognition.

100% of persons with Autism have difficulty in integrating the sensory input i.e. one sensory organ does not talk to other for gaining experience and knowledge which must happen otherwise. There is a disparity in Etiology and explanation about the symptoms. At one end it is said that Autism is basically a disorder of socialization and communication whereas on the other end it is said that family which is the primary units of society is not responsible for Autism. I do not disagree to the hypotheses which are still waiting to be proved for determination of Etiology. I have experienced no. of incidence of Autism which has increased many fold for the last 20 years. Autism is not an epidemic which is caused by virus or toxin neither the Gene of so many people got defective to have so many children with Autism. A logical interpretation is required before we do something for such kind of disorders, specially labeling them with a problem stating that this is life long problem. Therefore through this article I would like to convey the massage to all concerned that we should not victimize such children for our problems. When we probe into the problem of incidence of Autism there is higher tilt of percentage in families with conflict, or nuclear and both working parents.

Such children are born with intact sensory-motor abilities which requires constant training and integration. Parents now a days are very excited and anxious about their new born baby but not at their personal cost. Sacrifice of family and parents is a must for normal rearing and development of a child. Parents have gone towards the modern way of living in terms of reducing the amount and kind of care and attention required. For example Prams and Aya's have replaced the mother and grannies hands for pseudo status and undisturbed sleep of parents and family members. Grandma's stories have been replaced by cartoon films and video games. mud and soil have been replaced by Johnson Baby Powder and Olive oil, teddy bears and toys have replaced the siblings, cousin and neighbour's children. There are many such examples. These were the traditional methods for training the child for sensory training and sensory-motor co-ordinations. Such training leads to knowledge, cognition social development and performance.

Autism can be concurred by reintroduction of age old methods of parenting and socialization. All the therapeutics and training should focus on independent stimulation of sensory in puts along with coordinating one sensory stimuli to other. Labeling the child creates disappointment and disgrace to parents and family. Therefore focus should be on the aspects of the symptoms through systematic planning according to the natural and traditional child rearing system based on theoretical foundation.

Types of Autism Your Child Might Be Diagnosed With

Autism is not a disease in and of itself, rather it is a group of symptoms that result in profound disability. Although many people think of all autistic children having the problems. This is not true. There are several common characteristics of autism, but any one child does not show each of them and the degree of severity can vary from very mild to severe.

All children diagnosed with an autism type disorder have some combination of developmental delays. The exact combination is what differentiates among the types of autism. This diagnosis is made by a trained developmental therapist of psychologist.

There are five recognized types of autism:

Aspgergers :Children with this diagnosis usually have high functioning autism. This condition may often be confused with obsessive compulsive disorder or social anxiety disorder. Aspergers is usually diagnosed later than autism.

Kanner Syndrome: A child with this syndrome is locked in his/her own world. They have great difficulty interacting with others. Extreme language difficulty and inability to express emotions are always present. This child is generally very resistant to change in routine, things must stay the same. They are generally low functioning and unable to live independently

Rett's Syndrome: This a rare disorder first described by Dr. Rett. It occurs almost exclusively in girls. Dr. Rett first diagnosed this syndrome in the 1960's but in the late 1990's a gene was found that might cause this disorder. The girls' with this disorder may seem normal at first, but they usually suffer from muscle atrophy and experience repetitive movements with their hands, and often show signs of mental retardation. The girls are low functioning and unable to live independently.

Childhood Disintegrative Disorder: This is also a rare disorder in which the children seem to have normal development at birth and until age 1 or 2 when they regress, usually do not potty train. They lose language skills and the ability to interact with others.

Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not otherwise specified:

PDD-NOS describes children having the same symptoms as autism. They need the same interventions. The differences between PDD-NOS and autism can usually only be recognized by researchers.

All five of these forms of autism fall under the umbrella of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) they are also called pervasive developmental disorders (PDD). To the children and their families, exactly which label is given to their child, while helpful for specific therapies does not really make a difference in the outcome.
