Leaky Gut Treatment - What Are The Most Effective Methods?

Leaky gut syndrome is defined by an increased permeability of a person's gut in response to undue inflammation and irritation of the intestinal walls. As this heightened permeability results to the inappropriate functioning of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, it could have tremendous effect on a number of body processes, and is a primary factor in the progression of most autoimmune diseases and food allergies. Though a leaking gut has become increasingly typical and could have colostrum supplementation as an effective leaky gut treatment, doctors often overlook this health condition when diagnosing and prescribing any treatment for its associated symptoms.
GI tract inflammation increases its permeability via formation of sizeable gaps between cells lining one's intestinal walls. While larger molecules passing a healthy gut are digested into smaller pieces before passing into one's body, with leaking gut, these molecules could pass through the intestinal linings before these metabolic processes are complete. Bacteria, toxins and viruses could also pass through a leaking gut, permitting them to enter the circulation & gain direct access to tissues throughout the body. So what is the best leaky gut treatment? To recognize appropriate treatment, people need to understand common disorders that cause it.
First is a weakened immune system. This condition weakens one's immune system by decreasing its ability to fight pathogens at its point of entry - the gastrointestinal tract. Inflammation and/or irritation of intestinal walls impairs the protecting lining enclosing immunoglobulin antibodies that are usually present in a normal gut, rendering them dormant & removing a significant line of defense. What is the leaky gut treatment? One should simply strengthen his immunologic system by eating healthily and performing regular exercise. A diet full of fruits and vegetables is an effective and natural solution as it also helps to clean the intestines.
A second common disorder is nutritional deficiencies. For minerals and vitamins to be transported into one's body, they rely on carrier proteins which reside in the gut. Such proteins are also harmed by inflammation in a leaky gut, making them unable to carry ingested vitamins and minerals into one's body for utilization. Similarly, very long periods of irritation could prevent the absorption of said nutrients and essential proteins. What is the leaky gut treatment? An increased intake of vitamins, minerals and proteins could somehow compensate for the lack of absorption. As mentioned, a nutritious diet is a good way to treat your symptoms.
The biologically active elements in colostrum are incredibly effective in leaky gut treatment as it strengthens one's immunologic system. They also repair tissues damaged by autoimmune diseases, another common health disorder. Colostrum supplementation seals the mucosal layer of the intestines as well, making them impervious to larger molecules & microorganisms and preventing the development or further progression of the disease. Additionally, growth factors found in bovine colostrum could have an anti-inflammatory outcome throughout one's body, making colostrum highly substantial in the primary solution for this condition, and alleviating the painful symptoms of several autoimmune diseases associated with a leaking gut syndrome.

Healing Diets Alleviate Autism Symptoms

Your monthly autism support group is helpful. Sometimes, a mom sitting next to you is busy jotting down a shopping list. You notice some interesting items: coconut flour, rice noodles, gluten-free cereal and quite a few organic fruits and vegetables. Immediately you realize that this mom must follow a special autism diet for their child. You may wonder if these diets really do benefit children with autism.
You may have done little research on diet, as you have been very focused on behavioral therapy. What are the facts supporting autism diets? You may begin to wonder if your child can benefit.
Diet is an important part of intervention for autism. According to leading autism organizations, autism pediatricians, nutritionists and parents around the globe, autism diets provide measurable results in helping reduce children's symptoms of autism.
There are many diets that autism nutrition specialists, physicians and parents are applying with great results. They are the Gluten-Free Casein-Free (GFCF) Diet, Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD), Gut and Psychology Syndrome (GAPS) Diet, Low Oxalate Diet, Body Ecology Diet, Feingold Diet and the Weston A. Price Diet-each with their own individual healing properties.
Autism diets are recommended and applied with the help of nutrition consultants based on a child's autism symptoms, food allergies and sensitivities, digestive capacity, family history, bio-individuality, and a number of other criteria.
According to parents polled by Autism Research Institute (ARI), after mercury/heavy metal chelation, autism diet is the most effective intervention for children on the autistic spectrum - more that any drug, nutrient or other biomedical therapy. One simple healing principle holds true today: thousands of children are finding relief from symptoms of autism as parents correctly and diligently apply autism diet. Autism is treatable and diet helps.
Parents and physicians consistently report improvement in the following symptoms: stimming, sleep, language, eye contact, attention, hyperactivity, learning, fatigue, aggression, self-injurious behavior, rashes, digestion, diarrhea, constipation and gas. While children experience symptom alleviation at different levels, the GFCF Diet, for example, shows a 65% improvement rating ("got better") as reported by thousands of parents in an Autism Research Institute (ARI) survey; Specific Carbohydrate Diet, while a smaller sample of hundreds, has shown a 66% improvement.
Every parent with a child on the autism spectrum that takes the time to do cursory research and read parent reports regarding autism diets finds that they have a very powerful healing tool right at their fingertips.
While it's important to consult a qualified autism nutrition and diet specialist, it's beneficial to take the time to understand and explore how food heals and how a particular diet may help your child. Since parents feed their child every day, the more you comprehend diet and nutrition, the more effective you can be. Visit autism diet websites and explore the leading autism diet books available. You are your child's most important health advocate.
On your next trip to the grocery store, take these first simple steps to implement a healing autism diet for your child. Purchase organic fruits and vegetables when possible; remove all artificial ingredients, colors and preservatives from food choices. Do not purchase pre-package foods such as canned or frozen chili, macaroni and cheese or taco seasoning. Serve only meat from grass-fed animals when possible. By choosing nutritional organic foods to prepare for your family, you remove harmful toxins, colors, additives, pesticides, PCBs, antibiotics and hormones from your child's dinner plate.
The first diet most parents, physicians and autism nutritionists recommend is the Gluten-Free Casein-Free Diet. Find out about the interesting facts behind this diet-it's helping many children on the spectrum. Enjoy the process-if a healing diet might help your child, why not try it? Connect with parents on autism diet Facebook and Yahoo! groups for success stories, resources, new ideas, recipes and diet implementation tips. Remember, the most important step to implementing autism diet-just start!

Is a Gluten and Casein-Free Diet an Answer to Autism or ADHD?

A gluten- and casein-free diet is as much of an answer to autism and ADHD as a band-aid that is soaked in antiseptic, and blood-clotting solution is an answer to a bullet that causes infection and bleeding in the body.
So, if one looks at some symptomatic improvement in both situations, autism and the bullet, and is happy to report it, there is nothing wrong with this, per se. However, if one assumes, in the process, that something of essence has been accomplished in autism, ADHD or in the overall health of this child, one has made the wrong assumption. The distributors of this and other diets often convey an impression that there is something fundamental or genetically sinister about these proteins - gluten and casein or other foods such as soy, corn, etc. - and, therefore, these and other diets are presented as some big answers to autism and chronic diseases. As "proof" to this, autism and other diseases do seem aggravated by allergic foods. However, in spite of the fact that these aggravations are formally correct, such an approach to chronic diseases is wrong because it confuses the trigger and the cause of disease. In practically 100% of all cases with allergens triggering any chronic disease, allergens are never the cause of autism or any other disease. Furthermore, the preoccupation with allergens detracts from the search for the 'bullets' - the true causes of disease - which by remaining in the body will inevitably continue causing further damage and destruction and, thus, leading to more advanced and more diseases. That is why avoiding triggers leads to neither substantial nor long-lasting progress. And that is why once the diet is broken, even if on few occasions, whichever the symptoms that seemed to have been subdued in autism and other diseases rebound viciously. In addition, even if the diets are maintained religiously, new triggers find their victim, anyway. That is why I have seen multitudes of patients who started out with excluding just 3-4 allergic foods from their diets and who have subsequently ended up becoming allergic to so many foods that they were down to only 3-4 foods, total. That is because that the bullets or the causes of allergies have remained in the body and kept eating it away as the disease and overall health worsened. So, the bottom line is don't chase triggers, but pursue the bullets, instead.
What are these bullets in the case of gluten and casein in autism or in all food allergies, in general, and how to and how not to go about identifying and addressing these?
These "bullets" are primarily toxicological agents such as mercury, lead, methylmercury, pesticides and a few others as well as gastrointestinal infections such as parasitic, yeast, and, sometimes, bacterial infections also. The best way to misdiagnose these is to do exactly what most of the alternative practitioners do - that is, to order blood, stool and other lab tests. (Conventional doctors are even out of the equation here because they act as if their patients are immune to these toxicants or infections and that is why they hardly ever look for these.)
The main reason why blood, stool and other lab tests are unreliable is because their detection ability is very low. And even if a blood test confirms allergy to gluten or casein it is not worth subjecting your child to being stuck with needles because the blood test, even if positive, cannot tell what symptoms these or other foods or nonfood allergens will or will not trigger. This, one can establish simply by avoidance or observation.
As far as stool is concerned for gastrointestinal infections, in order for these tests to be positive, a sufficient and large number of infectious organisms or parasitic eggs must show up in the specimen on the day of collection. This rarely happens because these infectious agents may not be present in sufficient numbers on the intestinal surface itself but burrow inside it where they become undetectable to stool tests. And even if stool or lab tests catch one or two infections this does not mean that the tests did not overlook other infectious agents at the same time. It is often, that these other infections are the ones which cause most of the allergies and the notorious leaky gut which are commonly present in autism and other chronic diseases.
Of course, this is not anything that a diagnostic lab will share readily with a doctor or a doctor with you. As a result, most of the time, the lab tests end up misleading instead of leading. This, as many other important facts in medicine remains "classified", i.e., not for patients' ears. Besides, even if and when these infections become partially detected, the pharmaceutical treatments for these with using drugs or "natural treatments" can often be worse than the infections themselves. The reason for this we explain in the DVD, Autism -A curable disease that also explains why any chronic infections remain incurable whether in autism or Lyme disease or other as long as toxicological and other agents mentioned in the DVD continue causing the state of immuno suppression in the body. Concerning heavy metals and other toxicants, both lab and chelators/detoxifiers are not capable of properly addressing these either. Instead, the chelators can cause unpredictable and even worse toxic effects than the metals themselves. This is also reflected in the DVD, Autism - A curable disease and in my article Chelators of Mercury, Lead and Other Heavy Metals: Theoretical Benefits, Suboptimal Results and Real Dangers. The Implications for Autism, Other Brain- and Somatic Diseases. (This article, even in spite of being supported by scientific references, has been rejected for publication by several alternative medical peer review journals. Certainly, it flies in the face of their editorial staff which tries to dress up the store window of alternative medicine as "natural", "progressive" and harmless. The reader may also find the DVD, The power of missing knowledge: An explanation for the failures of conventional and alternative medicine in chronic and degenerative diseases. An introduction to FCT as very edifying as it explains why terminology as "natural", "progressive" or "harmless" belongs rather to the territory of fairy tales or naive assumptions, rather than to the real facts or factual science.)
The main diagnostic tool that I use and that overcomes all of the lab hurdles and omissions is - bioresonance testing. This noninvasive test that is capable of tuning into gastrointestinal and any other organs energetically and completely pain free is ideal for children and adults, also. This is particularly the case for children with autism who have been through the proverbial mills of tests.
Homeopathic treatment that begins with the removal of the immunosuppressive agents and residues of antibiotics or side-effects of vaccines, the necessary requirements without which all infections are doomed to chronicity, treats these infections very effectively. As the rule, "genetic" gluten and casein and other food allergies disappear. Following the treatment course, children or adults consume formerly allergic foods without untoward reactions.

Biomedical Autism Treatment - Diet Helps Autistic Kids Get & Stay Healthy

For most kids getting periodic colds, congestion or upper respiratory infections (ear, sinus) is a normal part of growing up. However, children should not have to get sick at every exposure. If your child seems to develop an illness quite frequently, their immune system is likely in a weakened state. The goal then is not to prevent them from ever getting sick, but to reduce the frequency (and duration) of an illness. The way to accomplish this is through a strong immune system, and diet can play a big role in strengthening immune resistance to bacteria and viruses.

The following is a list of considerations to implement biomedical autism treatment to help support a health body and immune system for autism-spectrum children (ASD):

Whole Foods Diet - A whole foods diet contains quality sources of protein (poultry, fish, eggs, lean meats, beans, nuts, nut butters) lots of fresh fruits and veggies, nuts and seeds and high quality fats and oils such as flax oil, olive oil and coconut oil. You want to eliminate as many processed foods as possible - foods that are processed with chemicals, preservatives, additives, flavor enhancers, artificial colors and sweeteners, added sugar and hydrogenated oils.

Reduce Sugar - A tablespoon of refined sugar can suppress the immune system by 50% - in some cases for up to four hours. If your child is eating high sugar foods frequently throughout the day - candy, cookies, doughnuts, ice cream, soda, sugary cereals, and products with corn syrup or high fructose corn syrup - their immune system is likely suppressed all the time. If this is the case they are at a much greater risk of developing frequent illnesses.

Eliminate Dairy Products - Cow's milk dairy products can be mucous forming foods. Mucous in the mouth and respiratory tract provides a friendly medium for bacteria and other pathogens to grow. Many children on the autism-spectrum have a history of chronic ear and respiratory infections. They likely have an allergy to dairy. Eliminating the dairy has been found to significantly help children on the autism-spectrum - not only because of their immune weaknesses, but dairy products can also cause behavioral (tantrums, irritability) and cognitive (attention, focusing) problems as well.

Get More Essential Fats - Certain good fat sare called essential because our body cannot make them and we must get obtain them from our food. There are two types of essential fatty acids (EFAs) - omega 6 and omega 3. Most people get an abundance of omega 6 EFAs found in nuts, seeds, safflower, sunflower and corn oils. However, many ASD kids are not getting enough omega 3 EFAs. Sources high in omega 3 EFAs include fish oil, flax oil, krill oil and cod liver oil. EFAs are important for the immune system and help to regulate activity of white blood cells (T-cells and B-cells) that fight off infections.

Include Probiotics - Probiotics are beneficial bacteria. These include the common lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidobacter bifidus. These normal intestinal bacteria help to strengthen what is called the mucosal immune system. The mucosa of the mouth, respiratory and intestinal tracts are considered to be our first line immune defense. The mucosa helps to fend off invading pathogens once they have entered our body. Probiotics help to enhance the effectiveness of our mucosal immune system.

Whole Food Nutritional Supplement - A great way to obtain a wide variety of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, enzymes, etc. is to use powdered greens. There are a number of products available at most local health food stores that are good for kids.

One way of getting children to take supplements is mixing them in a smoothie. Listed here is an example of a great tasting and nutritious smoothie drink.

1 cup almond or rice milk

1-2 tablespoons flax oil or fish oil

1-2 tablespoons partially ground flax seeds

1-2 tablespoons powdered greens

2-3 capsules of probiotics

½ to 1 banana

Blended mixed frozen fruit - add as much as needed to obtain the consistency you feel your child will like (frozen strawberries, cherries, blueberries, mango, etc.). Mix well in blender. This will generally create 2 to 3 servings.

Don't let ANYONE tell you there is nothing you can do to help your child. Autism really is treatable! Start your child down the road to recovery from autism. Gluten Free Casein Free Diet For Autism

A GFCF diet is gaining recognition for helping children with autism. Removing gluten and casein from a diet can prove to be challenging as gluten and casein are found in many foods we eat. A GFCF diet for autism is considered an alternative treatment and is based on the belief that many with autism have allergies to gluten and casein.

Many believe autistic children may have an allergy or high sensitivity to both gluten and casein and choose to have allergy testing done. However, there are those that claim, even with no shown allergies to gluten or casein, that their child improved considerably with a GFCF diet. The belief is that children with autism process the gluten and casein differently and as a result their symptoms are exacerbated.

Some parents, as well as Doctors, believe that removing gluten from an autistic child's diet can be beneficial. Gluten is a protein found in the seeds of barley, oats, rye and wheat. When on a gf diet most breads and crackers are avoided, unless of course they are gluten free and reading nutrition labels becomes a way of life. Gluten can be found in many foods such as soy sauce, BBQ sauces and many times is a hidden additive so it is important to become familiar with safe gluten free foods.

Removing casein can prove to be just as challenging because casein is in many foods as well. Casein, a milk protein, is contained in dairy products and other foods containing dairy. Casein can also be found in dairy and lactose free foods and is often times a hidden additive, just as gluten is.

Beginning a GFCF diet is becoming easier than in the past because of the wide availability of gluten and casein free foods. Many companies are making it easier to identify GFCF foods with marketing and labeling and health food stores have begun to carry GFCF foods as well. Mainstream stores are jumping on board and making it easier for the consumer to identify and purchase GFCF foods.

The elimination of gluten and casein is gaining recognition and support in the world of autism. If your child suffers from autism this may be an alternative approach worth educating yourself on.

Gratefully Gluten Free began as a small GF business offering GF baked goods. It has since grown into a webstore offering three different all purpose GF flour's for all your GF baking and cooking needs. Visit https://www.gratefullygf.com for more information.

Autism Treatment - Respen-A Dosages and Autism

I have had some parents who have asked me about, and have concerns over, the fact that Respen-A contains an ingredient that is derived from a drug. Reserpine is the active ingredient in Respen-A. Reserpine is derived from an Indian herb called snakeroot, its name being rauwolfia serpentine. The FDA approved the use of Reserpine for hypertension in 1955. These days, Reserpine is not used all that often to treat hypertension, at least not to a significant degree. So it was approved to treat high blood pressure but now there are many other medications used now. When it was used to treat hypertension, the dose used was.1 -.5 mg. What is used in Respen-A is.01 mg so you are getting between 10 to 50 times less Reserpine in Respen-A than what was used for high blood pressure.

Respen-A was first introduced into the Autism community around November of 2008 and there was a small study done to track some children for about a year's period between November 2008 and November 2009. A press release was sent out based on the results, which were very promising, and then parents began using it for their children. Back in 1957 there was a study, published in the Journal of Mental Disorder and Disease, using Reserpine on a group of children with Autism. The study used an oral elixir with a dose of between 3 and 7 mg. Remember, the FDA approved Reserpine at a dose of.1 and.5 mg for hypertension and in 1957 they were using 3 - 7 mg on children with Autism using an oral elixir. The findings of the study were that the children had better verbal communication, better eye contact, better socialization, much less self stimulatory behavior, better overall awareness, more willingness to socialize and more willingness to play, etc. And quite honestly what we are seeing in children with Respen-A is the same things that we see improvement in with children using therapies like Methyl B-12.

Some children do report some side effects like excessive sleepiness or some report dry mouths, but nothing that was very significant. But when the doses were increased to 10 - 12 mg, then adverse neurological behaviors were observed, similar to Parkinson's symptoms. But these doses used back in 1957 were 200 to 700 times the amount that is used today in the Respen-A patch. So you can see that the dosages are not even close to one another and yet the benefits we are seeing certainly are. Again, the improvements I see in my patients who are using Respen-A include better eye contact, improvement in quality of speech, improvement in general awareness, a more deliberateness in speech and also appropriateness of speech, and improvement in socialization are the main improvements I have seen in my practice. I want to highlight these things because I feel that there is a misconception out there about what Respen-A does and I wanted to show the actual amounts of Reserpine that are used in Respen-A compared to the amounts used in the study in 1957 and even the amounts used for high blood pressure.

Autism Treatment for My Child - What Should They Eat?

There are a lot of things that you want to avoid when using diet as an autism treatment tool for your child. But there are also a lot of things that you want to put in their diet, that can help ameliorate some of the symptoms and help them cognitively and behaviorally.

1. Vitamins

First of all, you will want a diet that is well balanced in terms of essential vitamins. Vitamin B is an important one. It helps increase brain function, can help produce neurotransmitters, and helps the absorption of essential nutrients into the body. This in turn helps improve nervous system function. All of this increases overall health.

Vitamin C improves the immune system, as most people know.

Also, though, it helps neutralize free radicals in the body. Free radicals are naturally occurring chemicals that can cause problems for the body; Vitamin C is an anti-oxidant, and as such, helps to control the damage that the free radicals do.

Multivitamins are important to take because many people with autism have deficiencies in many vitamins and minerals. Vitamins can be an essential autism treatment for your child.

2. Probiotics

Probiotics can help the digestive problems that so often plague autistic kids, and can be an effective autism treatment for these symptoms in your child.

Our guts have a lot of "friendly bacteria" that keep things in balance. Sometimes, though, these friendly bacteria can get out of balance and start to bring havoc on our bodies and digestion. Using probiotics as a supplement brings things back into balance.

Probiotics can improve bloating and gas issues, and other digestive issues. Digestive complaints are common with those on the autism spectrum. Yogurt is a good source of probiotics. Plain yogurt is better than the sugary flavored kind, however.

The best way to get probiotics is a full spectrum supplement that has many different strains of probiotics. Your doctor or someone at your local health food store can help you figure out what kind are best for you.

3. Essential Fatty Acids

What are Omega 3s? They are essential fatty acids. Your body can't make them but they do a lot for your health. Omega 3s improve brain function. They seem to "oil" the gears of the brain, especially in the case of the child with autism. Omega 3s also help prevent cancer, heart disease and arthritis.

The best way to get Omega 3s is from fish. Salmon is a great source of Omega 3s. Fatty fish, like mackerel, trout, herring, sardines, and albacore tuna also work well. Many nuts, like pumpkin seeds and walnuts, have Omega 3s too. Of course, the easiest thing to do is to get fish oil supplements that have Omega 3s in them. You will want to find supplements that have both Omega 3s and 6s in them. Nordic Naturals is one such company that makes an excellent product.

So you see, adding a few extra things to your child's diet can be an excellent addition to your autism treatment plan for your child.

And parents should learn as much as you can about dietary issues in the treatment of autism. Tips from other parents and professionals can be extremely helpful. A great site that has tips and suggestions for additional treatments is the AmericanAutismSociety.org. There you can sign up for their FREE newsletter with tips and info on autism.

Beyond The GFCF Diet - So Many Autism Diets to Choose From - Which One Do I Need?

Frequently Dr. Neubrander is asked what diet is the best or in what order the diets should be added. The following article was written by Dr. Neubrander to address this issue.

Please note that diets are an individualized thing and there is no simple answer. A few general rules that will apply to most patients the majority of the time (with major exceptions, of course!) are as follows: Begin with the GFCF diet first and observe for clinical benefits. The next diet is usually the SCD followed by the diets that eliminate special foods (elimination and rotation), food chemicals, e.g. phenolics, salicylates, glutamates, excitotoxins, etc. This can be followed by a "limited" low oxalate diet (not yet strict), the Body Ecology diet or the GAPS diet (Gut and Psychology Syndrome diet). The last diet many parents move to is a very "strict" low oxalate diet. NOTE THAT THERE IS NO 'PERFECT ORDER' AND DIFFERENT CHILDREN WOULD DO BETTER TO SWITCH THE ORDER. This is something that parents and their clinician could do together, though more often than not parents experiment on their own as they watch what works and what does not work for their child.

As stated, there are reasons that a child may need to skip over "the next usual diet to be added" to go farther down the list. These "skips" or "exceptions" are usually based on a child's symptoms, a discussion too big and too specific to be covered in this comment. Trial and error is the tried and true method. Lab tests are very often misleading and confusing. In addition, lab tests are not always available for many of the different "mechanisms of action" that may be operative. Even if a lab test was possible to do, because there are so many different lab tests to look at all the different mechanisms - IgE "true" food allergy, IgG non-allergic "delayed" hypersensitivity, difficulty breaking down peptides, gastrointestinal enzymatic deficiencies, cytotoxicity, direct chemical reactions, toxic or intolerance reactions to food components or contaminants, etc - it is financially impossible and impractical to do them all. Therefore, the CLINICAL TRIAL IS THE BODY'S BEST LAB TEST, but only if done in a systematic and progressive manner.

In general the casein-free, gluten-free diet helps over 60% of children on the autism spectrum according to ARI data. Though such a diet has been historically mocked by our detractors as unproven, unhealthy, and ineffective, as time marches on more and more peer reviewed articles are appearing in respectable journals documenting this diet works for a significant subset of the children on the spectrum. The reasons discussed in the published papers why this diet works has a spectrum of its own ranging all the way from "unknown but definite" to "gastrointestinal" all the way to "immunological" reasons. One recently described but definite reason that milk may be playing a negative role in children on the spectrum is because of a cerebral folate deficiency. In the "absolute" deficiency syndrome there is an autoimmune reaction whereby the body produces antibodies against the folate receptors found at the choroid plexus, thus blocking the body's ability to get reduced folic acid molecules across the blood brain barrier into the cerebral spinal fluid and ultimately into the neurons. It is becoming apparent that every child does not need to meet the criteria to be diagnosed with an "absolute" cerebral folate deficiency to be suffering similar negative neurological symptoms due to a "partial or incomplete" blockade of the same biochemical pathway. Cerebral folate deficiency studies show that when milk is present, the blocking antibodies rise, that when milk is taken out of a child's diet the blocking antibodies fall substantially, and that when milk is reintroduced, the blocking antibodies once again rise very quickly! Research also shows that the longer one is exposed to milk, the higher the antibody levels become. Of special interest at the time of this post (August 2011) is that out of the 120 children we have tested so far in our clinic for folate receptor autoantibodies, 2/3 of them (65.8%) have been positive to either the blocking and/or binding folate receptor autoantibodies. Of even greater interest is that we can often do something to treat the problem effectively, occasionally even to the 'Wow-degree'!

What is not well understood is that there are many different "mechanisms" as to why a certain food may cause problems in different subsets of individuals that look alike and have the same types of symptoms. Let's use casein as one good example. Some patients cannot tolerate casein well because of the "OPIOID" MECHANISM which causes a drug-like reaction. This opioid-like phenomenon is due to the inability of "specific" enzymes that break down key bonds that occur between the molecules holding together certain parts of a casein molecule [also certain parts of a gluten molecule]. Therefore, "if" a patient lacks this specific enzyme, DPPIV ["DPP-four"], casein may not be broken down into its smallest common denominator (single amino acids named "peptides") and thus remain as polypeptides or "dipeptides," which are then absorbed and subsequently "misread" by the body's opioid receptors with which they cross react as opioids [morphine-like drugs]. This "OPIOID REACTION" to casein/milk products is only "ONE SPECIFIC MECHANISM" to a host of mechanisms why dairy may not be good for a certain subset of children. The "ADENOSINE CONNECTION" is "ANOTHER SPECIFIC MECHANISM" whereby dairy products from milk (not eggs), acting through the DPPIV pathway, blocks the effectiveness of methyl-B12.

"ANOTHER SPECIFIC MECHANISM" why some children will do better without dairy products is because the child may have "TRUE FOOD ALLERGIES", e.g. the IgE antibody response [accepted by all conventionally trained physicians]. Still "ANOTHER SPECIFIC MECHANISM" why some children will do better without dairy products is because the child may have "FOOD SENSITIVITIES/INTOLERANCES" e.g. the IgG antibody response [accepted by most alternative medicine practitioners but only a small percentage of conventionally trained physicians]. "ANOTHER SPECIFIC MECHANISM" would include AN ABNORMAL CYTOTOXIC RESPONSE when the nuclei of cells are directly incubated with casein. When this is done, the nuclei "get angry" by taking in a lot more blue dye and the nuclei look just like the sky before a thunderstorm instead of a pretty blue sky on a summer day. Still "ANOTHER SPECIFIC MECHANISM" would include LACTOSE INTOLERANCE whereby "a different enzyme" than the one described above cannot break down milk sugar. When this happens, the undigested milk sugar bypasses absorption in the small intestine and travels down to the large intestine where bacteria and yeast say, "Yippee, beer and pretzel time!" and have a party on the front lawn of the large intestine. Unfortunately the byproducts of bacteria and yeast being "overfed" is the production of hydrogen and methane gases resulting in the child feeling bloated, having flatulence, and possibly abdominal pain.

Many similar mechanisms are happening with a child that may be better on a gluten-free diet, e.g. the DPPIV opiod-mechanism, the IgE and IgG mechanisms, and the cytotoxic mechanism. An ADDITIONAL MECHANISM comes into play with gluten, that being the AUTOIMMUNE PHENOMENON known as CELIAC DISEASE. In this disorder the body makes an antibody against its own intestinal mucosa. The mucosal lining becomes damaged and therefore the absorptive surface becomes compromised which impairs the body's ability to absorb. This can be pictured by opening one's hand to observe the fingers and knuckles which we will define as absorptive surfaces. When antibodies destroy the surface lining, picture this by making a fist. Now compare the two - the first one has a tremendous surface area while the second one has very little. So it is with celiac disease.

A popular diet right now for children on the autistic spectrum is the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD). The "mechanism" at work in this diet is still another enzyme deficiency - a specific class of enzymes that are supposed to break down starches or "two-part, two-molecule sugars." The food classification known as "carbohydrates" are comprised of individual biochemical units known as sugars [these are "biochemical sugars" that are not the same as the lay term "sugar"]. These biochemical sugar molecules have common names, e.g. glucose, fructose, and galactose. Biochemically these individual units of biochemical sugars are called mono ["one"] saccharides ["sugar molecule"]. When two of these individual sugar molecules are combined, they are now called dissacharides ["two" "sugar molecules"]. When a single "glucose" biochemical sugar molecule combines with a single "galactose" biochemical sugar molecule, the result is the disaccharide lactose, commonly known as "milk sugar." When a single glucose biochemical sugar molecule combines with a single fructose biochemical sugar molecule, the result is the disaccharide commonly known as "fruit sugar." When a single glucose biochemical sugar molecule combines with another single glucose biochemical sugar molecule, the result is the disaccharide commonly known as a "starch." Clinically it seems that there is a subclassification of enzymes that is unable to break down the "starchy" disaccharides [names like isomaltase -- a disaccharidase; palitinase -- a dissacharidase, etc]. These types of disaccharidases are especially hard on the intestinal tract [remember "ase" added to the end of a word just means an enzyme that digests the similarly named substrate, e.g. lactase digests the substrate lactose, etc.]. By simply removing these "relatively hotter disaccharides" from a child's diet, the child may improve significantly.

Other diets include elimination diets based on "true allergy tests - IgE tests," on "intolerance/sensitivity allergy tests - IgG tests," "cytotoxic sensitivity tests - lymphoblastic activation," or "chemical reactions to food substances," e.g. the Feingold diet and other similar diets, "metabolic disorders," e.g. avoidance of foods containing items like phenols, sulfur pathway offenders, tyramines, nightshades, the oxalate diet, etc. Each of these diets may work because of single mechanisms or alternatively because of combined synergistic mechanisms working together.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE SINGLE MOST VALUABLE LABORATORY TEST is a child's specific reaction to the introduction, restriction, and then reintroduction of a potentially offending substance. Therefore, When In Doubt, Cut It Out of the child's diet and observe clinically for results. Understand that the removal of an item may not give clinical results that are easily observable. However, with the reintroduction of the food, symptoms or decompensation may then occur.

The only real exception to the general principle stated above is to the "big baddies," things that are known to be life-threatening, things like peanuts, shrimp, etc. These are true IgE allergies and could have serious consequences if not respected. To these substances one should not consider reintroducing them just to see if the child has improved or can tolerate the substance or not. The problem is that if reintroduced, two things could happen. With the first reintroduction after being off the food for a period of time, the body may not have an outward reaction, though internally the body will lose what was a "temporary amnesic response" because it had avoided the food for a long period of time while it sets itself up for a serious reaction should the food be ingested again within a relatively short period of time. The second thing that could happen is that the child may react to the first reintroduction of the food and have a potentially life-threatening anaphylactic emergency.

Remember that each child is different and that each diet is different. The best way to determine when to start and when to stop a diet will be different, one child to the next. Therefore I always recommend professional help in these matters. As is standard for my practice, if I believe a result to starting a diet could be "very important," or have significant benefits or side effects, I will recommend that the diet be started at a time when no other variables are being added or removed from the child's program. The same general principle applies to the discontinuation of a diet.

Diets are very frustrating, no doubt. They are not "The American Way"! The right diet is not easy to find. And no diet is ever easy to do. It takes commitment by the parents and alters the family's lifestyle, one of the hardest things for all of us to do - change! However, diets are worth investigating by every parent because when the correct diet is found, many of the troublesome symptoms associated with the autism spectrum will diminish or disappear completely~! Good luck on your journey. We are here to help you in any way we can along the way.

James A. Neubrander, MD

In 2002 Dr. Neubrander accidentally discovered that the methyl form of the B12 family-"methyl-B12"- greatly helps children on the autism spectrum when used correctly. His protocols are now used by thousands of practitioners worldwide and parents universally say that methyl-B12 is one of the best treatments they have for their child. In 2005 Dr. Neubrander began using hyperbaric oxygen therapy for children with autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders. He has developed unique diagnostic protocols that allow parents to document 'undeniable changes' from this form of therapy when used correctly. Dr. Neubrander uses essentially all of the biomedical diagnostic and treatment tools commonly in use today by those considered leaders in this field. In addition to the biomedical treatments, his clinic uses QEEG-directed neurofeedback, and works closely with leading specialists in the field of speech and language, sensory and auditory issues, feeding difficulties, etc.
